The Jem and the Holograms movie fails it's source material like none before.

The Transformers, GI Joe and recent TMNT weren't exactly great films but at least they made an attempt to stay true to the source material.

There is zero attempt in the Jem movie.

In the original cartoon Jerrica Benton was an adult that owned and managed her own record company. She also ran the Starlight Girls foundation and orphanage. Last but not least, she was also the rock star/superhero Jem. To aid her Jerrica had a supercomputer, named Synergy, that used holograms to hide her secret identity and help her on her adventures.

In the new movie she is a tween that gets internet famous on youtube and then is manipulated and controlled by their manager Erica Raymond. Synergy is now toy robot that shows old home movies.

Young people, right? They like young-people shit, like YouTube videos, Instagram selfies and crazy hair. If you hate young people but want to pander to

It looked horrible. I never watched the cartoon, but knew the concept. If you're going to make a movie about a show with a loyal fan base, follow the original concept. Otherwise, who exactly are you targeting?

I understand you have to make it appeal to children of today and that the fanbase would not make a dent in it's box office. I just wonder why they wholesale threw out all the trappings of what made it popular to begin with. It's like Christopher Nolan was a producer.

The IDW Jem and the Holograms comic updates it to be relevant for modern kids but still manages to stay true to the source material. It's really not that hard. The problem with the movie is they hired a group of guys that obviously had contempt for the source material. Christy Marx, the creator of Jem, was completely shut out of the production and didn't even learn about the movie until the day it was officially announced.

I feel bad for Jem fans since there won't be another shot at a movie after this mess.

I know some of the characters and songs because I had a cousin who loved and it still does. The three of us cousins completed the Hasbro/Sunbow triangle. One loved Jem, one loved Transformers, I loved G.I. Joe.

That's the most sad part of this movie disaster. This will kill the Jem franchise and I'm not just talking about getting an actual Jem movie. No new cartoon, toys, etc. This is it for Jem.

Wow, that is a spectacular failure. I still don't understand abandoning the fantastical elements of this story, my daughter (the target) is inundated with such shows/movies. This would have been right up her alley.

Oof, worst opening ever for 2,400 theater release.

New releases Rock the Kasbah, Jem and the Holograms and The Last Witch Hunter all bombed at the box office this weekend, and The Martian ($15.9 million) overtook Goosebumps ($15.5 million) to reclaim the No. 1 spot, Box Office Mojo reports. Failing to crack the top 10 were Bill Murray's latest, Rock the Kasbah, and the highly-anticipated Jem and the Holograms adaptation. Rock the Kasbah's $1.5 million is the fifth worst opening of all time for a film playing in more than 2,000 theaters, Box Office Mojo reports, behind Jem and the Holograms, which took in just $1.3 million.

The guys had been working on it in developmental for 10 years! Yikes.

My daughter wanted to see it, based on her enjoying the reruns on the Hub/Discovery Family. I think I'm just going to tell her to wait for the DVD...because it probably won't be in theaters next weekend!

I know that's what they are now claiming. But with the obvious unfamiliarity and contempt they've shown the property, I strongly doubt that claim. Not to mention the script they used was originally not even for a Jem movie. They took a cartoon that was about adventure, excitement and empowerment and changed it to patronizing generic tween angst movie spliced with youtube videos. They are just trying to play the victim and excuse the disaster they unleashed.

Here's a recent interview with Christy Marx. Besides creating Jem she also worked on the GI JOE cartoon. The Jem cartoon was created to be fun and exciting for both girls and boys.

The Jem and the Holograms movie has been pulled from 2000 theaters after only two weeks.

Not surprising. It is sad this terrible movie is going to take the Jem franchise out with it.
