1977 Gabriel Toys Hal Needham: Stuntman Catalog

1977 saw Gabriel Toys try an interesting experiment in action figures.

Instead of licensing a hollywood movie, they sought to captilize on the making of a movie by creating a set based on then legendary stuntman Hal Needham.

The unique concept had a child filming a stunt sequence in a movie and was actually one of the more inspired (and sadly forgotten) toy concepts of the 1970s.

That is fascinating. Good for those that want to be in the movie industry.

    Never knew about this toy.

    Pretty clever.

Awesome playset, I'd even like it without the movie set parts for a western figure display. Reminds me alot of the town playset sold for the Ready Gang.

This was a very cool idea. and it's unfortunate they didn't get to expand on it further. I think the only other item in the line was a smaller piece that kind of "ejected" a figure forward, If I remember correctly.

I just watched "Three the Hard Way" last week on TCM. Stunts by Hal Needham!

This looks like it would have been fun if everything worked the way they said. A cop show set would have been cool!

I first discovered this toy through this forum. When I saw it, I forwarded images to my dad, asking him why they didn't get it for me when I was little. He responded, "We never heard of it or saw it. Otherwise, I'd have wanted it!"

Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

I remember seeing that set in one of the old wish books. Wanted it, but never got it.

It is a great set. Huge in fact. Hal is just a hair smaller than a Mego figure.

Hal Needham was a great guy. Gabriel made the Lone Ranger figures for both the TV series and the 1981 movie. RIP Hal Needham.
