In my ongoing childhood photo scanning project, I recently came across this one, which I thought some of you might enjoy. It's a picture of me (striped shirt, brown bowl-cut) and my best childhood buddies, Lincoln and Jason, checking out my Fisher Price Little People Castle, circa 1976.
The funny thing is that this picture was actually taken at my school! I attended nursery school at our Congregational church, and it was pretty awesome. There was some kind of weird WASP/hippy admixture going on there, as we seemed to spend half of our time dressed up as pilgrims (and not just around Thanksgiving, either) doing art projects, and the other half just sitting around eating, listening to records, watching TV (!?) or playing with toys, all in an almost unbelievably '70s-tacular setting. Unsurprisingly, after this I found all of my future school experiences, from kindergarten on, gravely disappointing...
Anyway, the story here is that, being the ultra-liberal sorts that they were, we were actually allowed to bring our own toys in to school from time to time, so long as we let everyone play with them for a while. On that particular day, I was inspired to bring in my Fisher Price castle, because the church actually looked kind of like one itself (just google "Glen Ridge Congregational Church" to see what I mean), and I already had a fixation on medieval/fantasy stuff. So, we lugged the whole set into the car (that thing was huge for a Fisher Price toy) and set it up in one of the school rooms. I remember that I had to keep rounding up the figures, as other other kids would wander off with them (the knight and dragon being particularly popular), but good fun was had by all. Luckily, my photography-obsessed mother snapped this shot before she left, so the moment has been saved for posterity.
