    Birthday '77!

Inspired by enyawd72's recent post, I remembered that I had a similar pic from my 1977 birthday party that I recently scanned in, so I thought I'd share it here:

Yes, that's right, it's the Mobile Bat Lab, being examined by my long-lost pal Lincoln! Although when I blew up the photo, I noticed that the Riddler had somehow hijacked the vehicle, so trouble was sure to ensue...

A few other points of interest:

Look over to the right, and you'll see a half-constructed Richard Scarry "Puzzletown" play set, part of an odd little line by Playskool that was only around circa '76-'77. I never really asked for these, but my mother (not pictured here, the woman in the photo is my aunt) seemed obsessed with them, so I ended up with the whole set. For that reason, I remember them fondly, although the line seems somewhat obscure these days.

Please observe my father, disguised here as Lance White (free prize if you get that reference). Bonus 70s superhero trivia: He played drums on the early disco hit "Superman" by Celi Bee. I kid you not.

I have a full set from this party. The "theme" was centered around "Emergency!", and one of my other big gets was the Starsky & Hutch Torino. So, do I win the '70s?

Awesome pic! Cool backstory too...thanks for sharing!
Do you get that same weird feeling looking at yourself in an old photo? You don't remember the moment itself but there you are...

      Thanks, glad you liked it!

Well, in my case, my mother was an OBSESSIVE photo-taker, so I have literally thousands of pictures from my childhood, and that's not even counting the ones that have been lost over the years. So, whether I remember the moment or not, it's often right there on film. I can kind of divide my youth by these photos, as she sort of stopped taking them around the mid 80s. I was getting a little older, we moved to a different town, my grandparents moved and sold off our family's longtime summer lake house (where I spent all of my childhood summers), amongst many other changes. That's when my childhood sort of ended and my metalhead-oriented 80s adolescence began, so these 70s/early 80s pictures always take me back to the best years of my childhood...

Very cool pic! Not surprised at all about your father, as soon as I saw the dude in the chair I thought "That guy is involved in the music biz"

That so cool. It's so neat to see my generation deep into the art of adventure with Megos. Nothing beats it. Thanks for sharing!!

Love this shot. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure why, but I'm fascinated with the view out the window. Where is that neighborhood? It reminds of the time we lived in Levittown, PA. After spending a lot of time in West Philly, Levittown seemed like the greatest place on Earth.

Nice pic! I had some Richard Scary figures, and I still have the little cat guy, because he somehow ended up at my grandparents' house. About 15 years ago my grandmother gave him back to me. Not sure if I had the playset, though.

It was in Glen Ridge, NJ. Basically a commuter suburb/bedroom community for NYC. That house was built for my great grandmother after her husband died, so she wouldn't have to live in the big old house without him. We often had birthdays and Christmas there when I was a child. It was on a more typically postwar-built suburban cul-de-sac (although the neighbors two places down were in an odd Frank Lloyd Wright house), so some of the houses did have that sort of look. However, the town itself back then was still very much an old-money WASP enclave. The kind of place that Thurston and Lovey would hang around when they weren't yachting off Newport. It was a great place to grow up, but things could get a bit starchy. I haven't been back in 30 years, but I'm sure it's much more diverse now.

The house we lived in was built by my great-great (or was it great-great-great?) grandfather in the early 1860s, and had one of those carriage house attachments. The house "next door" (these places were on very large parcels of land) was a gothic, ivy-covered old mansion named "Hours Manor" (after an earlier owner, Mr. Hours) that was pretty much a real life Addams Family sort of place. When you knocked, the owner's weird, taciturn son would slowly open the huge door, revealing an actual suit of medieval armor looming in the entryway. It was basically assumed to be haunted, and was a terrifying place to have to visit on Halloween. Sadly, it burned down years ago and seems to have been replaced with some nouveau bling monstrosity. I recently scanned in one of my favorite childhood photos for a friend, of me in front of the place, circa 1976. The Sesame Street sweatshirt and tricycle say "happy child", but my face betrays the terror that lurks within...

Yeah, it was a strange little line. It was only around for a brief time circa 1976/1977, and then seems to have vanished. I think it mostly consisted of these playsets, that were lettered instead of numbered for some unknown reason. It's all a bit obscure now, but from what I can tell there are also some rarer figures that only seem to pop up in the UK, and I think I even uncovered an unreleased prototype piece listed in an old catalog once. The best thing about the line might be the boxes, which just scream '70s.
