I had a real nice surprise while visiting a friend over the weekend, as I learned about some toys I didn't know existed before. These Star Wars figures were only sold in Peru and they're super neat, more after the jump!







These figures were made by BASA, a company I've known about as a Mego collector but really didn't think to explore further. Like a lot of companies south of the border, they had laws that prohibited them from importing foreign made toys. This resulted in BASA licensing Star Wars from Kenner and creating this home brewed marvels in their place.



This version is made of a slightly lighter material and did originally come with a simplified bandolier and gun. I'm told there really aren't many of these kicking around.



Darth Vader is also a simplified, hollow kind of piece, he has a distinct belt and should come with a cape as well.



His face differs greatly from the Kenner version as well, his eyes are huge!

I swiped this photo from Ebay to show the packaging these guys came in, don't bother falling too hard in love, these guys don't come cheap!

Love these. So strange they only picked Vader and Chewie. Must've been because they require similar plastic and tooling.

Since they're made in Peru they should have sculpted Chewy a derby

No stormtroopers? wouldn't they also be just plastic and tooling? oh well, just venting since I loved those guys

Some have speculated that there might have been a Stormtrooper since they are pictured on the box, but none have ever turned up. The general consensus of collectors who care about obscure toys like this is that there was no BASA Stormie made. But let's face it, Peruvian toys are in even more uncharted waters than Mexican Ledys and Cipsas, who knows what else is out there...

But Han Solo is on the box too. I think the Stormtroopers were a different kind of plastic than Vader and Chewie. Vader and Chewie seemed (and I'm guessing here) blow molded versus the Stormtrooper being (again guessing) injection molded.

True, but it looks like BASA wanted to take the fast, cheap and easy way out with these, so no Han! I'm not an expert on plastic molding, but from what I've read, the Kenner ones are injection molded and the BASAs are blow molded. All I know is that the Kenner Vader, Chewie and Stormie seem to be made out of similar plastic, while the BASA Vader and Chewie are made from a completely different type of plastic, based on feel, look and weight. Wish I knew more about plastics in order to describe it all better.

thanks for sharing! i only had chewie when they originally came out in the U.S. (to do battle with my Shogun Godzilla like some addled Yeti, no doubt) but have slowly been collecting the entire series. boba fett is especially impressive with accessories. and i like that he and vader seem to have over-sized heads. but, the peruvian bug-eyed vader here is something else entirely to behold! it seems also that he isn't shown with complete helmet gear on the box illustration-anyone else see that?...
