Cool Clunky Old Walkie Talkies

Was looking at an old comic book recently, and saw an advert for walkie talkies. It brought back some fun memories.

Anybody else recall playing secret agent or soldier with the vintage walkies? Morse code even!

I still have both Smokey and the Bandit and GIJOE walkie talkies. Everyone used to play with them back in the day.

Things or technology has changed so much to where the walkie talkie has been rendered irrelevant, unfortunately (at least as far as kids are concerned).

Ian, thanks for posting that pic...I had those! In fact, I think I had more than one set. Good lord those things got a lot play. As I recall, they had a really good range...even beyond what the packaging promised.

I suppose that they sold really well, over a good number of years. It seems like I saw them for sale in stores for a very long time.

And, I think that I had a second set, at some point, as well. I can't recall why, but I don't believe it's because the other set broke. Maybe I lost one or I thought I needed more than two.

I had that same set, my Dad took them so he could talk to his guys in the attic while installing air conditioning (Heating & AC business). My Mom just gave found these in the basement and gave them to my 9 year old son to play with, he and his thought they were great.

I had those Star Code 10 walkies! Got them in second grade, we had to sell candy bars door to door and there were various prizes you'd win depending on how much you sold. I'd set my sights on those walkie talkies and sold enough to get 'me. They actually lasted a few years, and many backyard play battles. I don't recall them having much range and they went through batteries pretty quickly though. I was the only kid I knew at that point who had them so I felt pretty cool for a moment haha.

I didn't have any, but my cousins had those old generic army looking ones. We used to play secret agent. We used the closet for our headquarters w/ a sign taped to the door that said "Secret Headquarters". The older cousins always made me and the younger ones play the bad guys, and tied us up, or shut us up in "jail" (bedroom).

I think I had the ones Ian posted...MUST have----I mean, why else would they seem so familiar?
Anyways----I enjoyed walkie-talkies of some sort as a little 70's kid----I also had some kind of CB thingie rig at some point.... but, like the walkie-talkie memories, the CB memories are very hazy.

I got walkie talkies for me 13th or 14th birthday, I was kinda mortified in front of my friends, until everybody was super excited about them.

I had the Star Trek ones. Didn't know Morse Code,so I'd just push the button to make random beeps. Another thing to drive my parents nuts.

I remember my friends and I followed the Morse Code printed on the front of the walkie talkies...kinda. We tried. I'm not sure we ever got it right. But yeah, all the beeps were fun.
