The 1980 Marx UK Black Hole Toy Catalog

The 1979 Disney sci fi spectacular "The Black Hole" didn't quite become the next Star Wars but the film did make an impression on a lot of us until the Empire Strikes back made us forget all about it.

The merchandising bonanza lead by Mego was particularly memorable. In the UK, the brand was handled by Louis Marx and they added some interesting items that sadly I don't think made it to market.

This one will always make me weep.

Check out the other never made toys I want in the 1980 Marx Black Hole Catalog.

Since I haven't seen the Black Hole in decades, this just reminded me that Star Lord's gun owes a bit to this movie:

I have a huge amount of love for this movie and do collect some memorabilia from it. I had all the Mego figures when I was a kid and sold them on eBay about 12 years ago which I have regretted ever since.

I would love to see the interior of the Palomino playset. I assume that is wasn't multi-level like the actual ship in the movie. I imagine it was just one round control room. I think a Cygnus bridge playset would have been massively cool too.

Yes, that laser pistol is beyond cool. Huge shame that never got made. I've loved those guns from the moment I first saw them in the movie way back when.

It's hilarious that the ad points out that all the figures can hold guns, yet the only one that comes with one is the Sentry Robot. LOL! All six human characters get to share one gun! Loads of fun there. :-)

As cheesy as that game with the marbles looks, they do get high props for creativity. It was actually a pretty clever concept.

      Good stuff!!!

I have always liked this "variation" on the Black Hole design, the Compurobot:

My Mom picked one up at a flea market decades ago...

Really liked those figures. It was my favorite 3 3/4 inch Mego line as a kid. Crazy fragile though. My Vincent's foot snapped off first time I put him in that clear stand. They sure looked great though. New BH figures are long over due as is a Blu Ray.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
