Pod Stallions 20: Watching the Detectives

Episode 20 is inexplicably a Quinn Martin Production and has us exploring the phenom of 70s detective shows and also has us kind of trying to figure what qualifies as a detective show (we don't quite see eye to eye).

    Regardless,
as children we sure did watch a lot of people getting murdered. We discuss the Columbos, Rockfords, MacMillans and Wives, Banaceks and Cannons of our childhood, the merchandising magic of Kojak and Starsky and Hutch.

We also go way, way off track, with discussions about Jamie Farr and Three Stooges, I'm sorry.

Episode 20 will hopefully have you asking "Just one more thing"

It's possibly our goofiest show. Jason loves it, I'm not sure what I think about it.

Hey, goofy is fine. I enjoyed it myself. Sure it rambled off topic a bit, but I didn't mind. It still touched on things that connect to kids of the 70s and 80s.

I watched a good chunk of those 70s detective shows as a kid, but I have very vague memories of them. You guys are right, it's odd that our parents let us watch those. I don't sit down with my 6-year old to watch CSI.

I remember the 80s shows much better. Magnum was a can't miss staple at our house. My mom was obsessed with Tom Selleck too. I was tempted by that car and figure set. Had they made TC and the copter, I'd have probably caved.

I was also a fan of Simon & Simon, and it always followed Magnum as you said. I even remember that comic book episode!

        Another fun one guys.

Yeah, I'm unsure as to how that happened, I've done two reboots of the show link. Hopefully it corrects itself.

                      Great show!
                      Couple points...

                      • Barnaby Jones and Cannon DID crossover twice.
The first time was the debut episode of "Barnaby Jones",
which was originally written as a "Cannon" episode in order
for Barnaby Jones to qualify as a spinoff. But Barnaby Jones
was sold on its own merit so it became unnecessary and it was
rewritten with Cannon as a guest star.

                      • I was late to the Dukes of Hazzard bandwagon cuz I'd rather
                      be watching The Rockford Files

Very enjoyable podcast! Man, did that bring back some memories. I think what we all have to remember about 70's television (in general) was how hard the censors were on everything. Take a show like SWAT. That was considered edgy and violent for it's day (One of the reasons it got pulled). But if you watch it now, it's hysterically dated by every measure. Starsky & Hutch is a fun show to watch, even now, but the bad guys were so sterilized that even on my highest disbelief setting, I can not escape without a few laughs. I mean how many crime bosses in the 70's drank warm milk and ran crime syndicates inside candy stores? Hilarious.

What was memorable about that show being cancelled was how incensed I got when I tuned in to see the debut of the Dukes of Hazzard and the iconic Ford Torino (strips and all) had been relegated to a secondary chase car. It was sad to see how quickly Hollywood forgot about these shows once they were cancelled.
It's also worth noting Paul Michael Glaser's most notable post-show credit likely goes to the Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger, which he directed.

I loved the Rockford Files and Columbo. Still watch them to this day. Where Rockford Files got it's business done by showing you the unconventional and flawed qualities of our hero (which made him so lovable), Columbo was a little more about the theater of the mind with it's co-stars. They don't make shows like this anymore and that type of entertainment is sorely missed. But a great show guys. An enjoyable listen as always.

                          I enjoyed it!

You're right about those MASH figures. They came out so late and I too saw them at Children's Palace, for years. At our Children's Palace, they were right across from the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Mego's (3 3/4 and 12 inch) and the Mego 12 inch The Black Hole figures (both lines sat there for years, as well). I thought the line was odd, too. I never knew any kids who watched MASH, on their own. And, I certainly never knew any kids who had MASH figures. Nothing against the series...it was great...but still. I always thought the Magnum P.I. stuff was odd. I saw some of it from time to time, but that was because my dad watched it.

Have to agree on that point, particularly as I've been watching my box set on vacations. Hopefully they'll get covered in a future episode. Other than that enjoyable as always. I download the eps from the blog and have had no issues.

I'm proud (or ashamed) to say I've seen every original run episode of Columbo. Columbo got the shift on merch not even a view master. I can picture a corgi Peugeot with a plastic hound now.
