    Carpet the kitchen!

The fad of carpeting the kitchen didn't take off in the 1970s. While not as gross as carpeting the bathroom, it's sole benefit were the deeply hypnotic patterns often made you forget why you were in the kitchen, thus discouraging snacks between meals.

I have never seen a house with carpet in the kitchen. I take it it did not go over well.

I'm surprised this didn't catch on with married men who are on a diet. "Honey. Are you in the kitchen?" "Ummmmm.......no?"

I've never seen a carpeted kitchen, but I have seen plenty of carpeted dining rooms, which can be just as dangerous. Our house had a luscious 70s-era carpet adorning the dining room when we bought it.

Growing up, I think we had that exact carpet in our kitchen! And it looked fabulous with the coppertone brown appliances! I really regret that I don't have any photos of that particular kitchen. HOWEVER, when I bought my first house in the 1990s, it was a showcase of the best of the late 1960s, early 1970s! Every single one of my friends was appalled, but I was in retro heaven! Of that, I have photos! I had orange shag carpet and a free-standing orange gas fireplace in the bedroom, string artwork on the walls, knotty pine, a teal bathroom, wooden beam ceilings, and an entryway light that was the most beautifully hideous fused glob of orange, yellow, brown and red plastics. But it was my kitchen that really shined with it's plaid carpet, coppertone brown appliances and gold-fleck Formica.

Sadly, when I got married, Ed had absolutely no interest in my 1970s masterpiece, even though it was in a beautiful riverfront location just a few minutes from Lake Michigan by boat. It sold through word of mouth before my realtor even got the sign in my yard. We thought the new owners were going to live there for a couple years before building a new house on the lot; They changed their minds and tore the house down just days after I moved out. Had I known that, I would have asked for permission to salvage the amazing architectural treasures from within.

For the last thirteen years,weI have been living in a big, new, boring, beige box. It is just like every other big, new, boring, beige box. Don't get me wrong, I am very thankful for our house, but I really miss my retro lifestyle.

That sounds awesome Rallygirl. My wife doesn't care too much for my retro leanings either, we live in a tan and white world.

My aunt, uncle and cousins lived in a much fancier and more "modern" house than we did back in the '70s and it had a carpeted kitchen (with an island!!). I can remember my mom talking behind their backs about how stupid she thought that idea was, but I think it was more out of jealousy.

Their house also had an attached garage, a sun porch, a brick fireplace, sliding glass doors and TWO bathrooms!!! I remember thinking they were rich. Turns out, we were just poor. LOL!

We had yellow carpeting in the bathroom. Bad idea. Water from the shower or bathtub would make the carpeting moldy and dingy and gray. In fact, when we moved in back in the mid-late 70's, one bedroom had royal blue carpeting, another with a pea green shag carpeting. And the stairs had a maroon shag carpeting. The kitchen had an orange counter.
I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two.

My grandmother had that exact carpeting in her kitchen.
I still remember when they had that redone.
Got the carpet. The appliances in harvest gold. Same color counter top, to go with the cabinets which had plastic doors/drawers that looked like wood.
I should have thought to get pics before my mom redid the place about 10 years ago.
But it had been like that for forever, so I never really gave it much thought.
