    1978 Shindana Toys Catalog

Formed in 1968 (with some no obligation assistance from Mattel), Shindana Toys was a Los Angeles based company that wanted to create unique toys for black children.

This catalog, from the company's tenth anniversary sees them branching out into a toy company that now provides a diverse selection of ethnic characters.

Speaking of characters, Shindana still offered such notable celebrities such as Redd Foxx, Dr J and even Marla Gibbs.

Check out the 1978 Shindana Catalog here

And don't stop there, we've also got the 1976 Catalog here:

I am blown away that there was a 'Florence' action figure.

Disco Wanda is really pretty. Does anyone know if her face was based on anyone in particular? She reminds me somewhat of Marilyn McCoo.

And Debby Boone has just been dethroned by Marla Gibbs as "most completely out of left field celebrity doll." Toni Tennille slips to #3. :-)

It really is a fantastic likeness of Marla. I knew immediately who is was from the header image before I even looked at the catalog page. It's really interesting that the description doesn't even mention the name of "one of the most popular television shows." And I love that she comes with both a "homemaker" outfit (complete with apron!) and a glamorous, gold lame "super star" gown. Such an odd combo.

I agree about Marla Gibbs. It falls into my "Wait, really?" category of figures, but it also is just a great sculpt.

Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

I've never seen a Slade figure before, just in pics. I'd love to find one of those someday along with a JJ Armes.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

I recall some of those from Christmas catalogs--JJ, OJ Simpson.

                    The Slade figure is great.
