I remember seeing these while shopping with Mom one day in Zellers. They were on the top shelf and all lined up. By the time they made it here, the 2nd issues were all you could get so Mazinga's brain ship was glued into his head.
I looked up, saw Mazinga and that was it. I HAD to have it. The comic came out not long after he showed up under the Xmas tree. The same Xmas, my friend got Raydeen and Daimos. Oh what fun we had with these things. Mazinga was great with his rockets. We'd set up all the Micronauts and Mazinga would take them down with his missles. The poor Micros didn't stand a chance if Daimos or Raydeen fired their fists! (The Micros suffered many broken limbs and busted vehcile parts due to this). One day, we were playing...Raydeen and Mazinga were having an aerial battle and CRACK! Mazinga's leg (from the knee down) went flying accross the yard. Raydeen's fist launcher cracked and fell to the ground. We just stood there, tears welling up... lol. Well, my friend ended up giving me his Raydeen. I still have them both. Mazinga has about half his missles, swords are long gone, missle launcher is beat up and cracked and his poor leg is still unattached. Raydeen lost his shield and spike, his delta wing missles and his fist launcher is still cracked but it works.
Owen McCarron drew the coloring books. I have all 3. Raydeen, Dragun and Mazinga. My friend and I would sit with him for hours while he told us about Marvel and worked on Fun And Games... He had a brand new Dragun sitting on his desk. He thought they were the coolest toys he'd ever seen and was an older man at the time. We thought that was SOOOOOOOOO cool. lol. The man was a sweetheart and he loved the Shoguns. I drew him a pic of Raydeen and gave it to him. I asked him why only Raydeen was in the comic and he told me Marvel couldn't get Dragun and Mazinga but he got to do the coloring books.
I have a few of the smaller Shoguns. I made custom boxes for them and did all of the artwork. I also made a custom Mazinga from scratch. I built the entire figure. I carved or sculpted every piece. His brain ship was even removable as was his sword. Unfortunately, I lent him out and he got busted up (That's another story). I have pix here on a CD somewhere.
I love the Shoguns. I have all the comics too. lol. These guys were just so BIG and cool looking, they didn't need tons of articulation. It would have been nice but they were so imposing. They were almost as big as me!

I always wanted the Godzilla especially as a kid. Any toy that massive as a kid was a must have and it being a Godzilla on top of that was just too much. Sadly it always eluded me.
Fast forward to a toy show last weekend. I'm cruising around with my 2 year old in his stroller and suddenly he screams "Godzilla"! There in all his glory is a a Shogun Godzilla. He has his hand, but liek many the lever in the back of his head has long since broken off. Seeing how excited by son was, and always wanting one myself, Godzilla was our first purchase at the show.
After we got him home, my 2 year old showed it to his 4 year old brother and I haven't seen it since.Mortui Vivos Docent
