    Daredevil Action Christmas

It would be silly to discuss Christmas in the 1970s without talking about one of it's most popular toys. The Evel Knievel stunt set seemed like a license to print money until a certain incident (you know..bonk! bonk!) ceased it's production.

Before that though, what an evergreen this thing was.....

    More Daredevil stunt goodness.

Well, being a girl, my daredevil Christmas was Derry Daring (Evel's ficticious female counterpart) when I was 8. She never went outside, but she used to perform her stunts in the hallway in our apartment. She'd jump book ramps, crash through domino walls and jump Matchbox cars. Sometimes I'd take her to my friend's house who had Derry w/ her Wheelie Car. Fun times!

(And I have all the stuff shown except the Canyon Cycle and the outfits).

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Evel made nearly all of his fortune off the toys, and blew through it as fast as it came in. Arguably the most successful toy line ever produced. Hard to believe just how hard this hit the kids of America, I couldn't imagine it happening again like this.

I had Evel and his Jet cycle and the Dragster.I always wanted to jump him off the roof of my Grandparents house but mom put the kibosh on that.

I could stare at that page all day. I do not think there was any kid in my neighborhood that did not have one of these.
          It's all good!

The stunt cycle is one of tne of the greatest, most satisfying toys of all time. The hours of fun and things you can do with it are nearly unmatched. My childhood Evel, the Team America version, AND the Playing Mantis reissue have jumped many a ramp, flown off many a deck, and for the most part, survived.

Evel himself was less than worthy of such adulation, but his toys were pure genius.

Amazing how a nonfiction personality became so entrenched in pop culture, and so marketed to kids.

Every once in a while, my daughter convinces me to bring Evel out of retirement for a few jumps. I will always love the sound of that gyro revving up.
