    Atomic Joe Love

This page is from the 1975 Eaton's catalog and I'm pretty sure I burned it into my brain that year. Joe's world (and packaging artwork) has always captivated me and 1975 was a super special time for me...mainly because I was five.

Atomic Man was a childhood favourite of mine (though the appearance of Steve Austin did diminish Mike's appeal) and Sky Dive to Danger (the set where Joe lands into a giant spider web) will forever be my favourite GI Joe set of all time.

For me GI Joe always made his presence known on Christmas morning throughout the early to mid 70's. There was nothing like waking up and running in to see all of that great packaged artwork laid out around the tree. Atomic Man was definitely a play off of Six Mill, but it was done in the Joe-style so it was allot of fun to add him to the team. Great memories of him fighting the Intruder and Bullet Man. I had three favorite adventure sets - Eight ropes of danger, Danger of the depths, and Secret mission to spy island. I think my favorite vehicle was the mobile headquarters ATV. I just loved the panel that pulled out and became a communications set up. I lost count of how many adventures I had with that vehicle and Atomic Man. Great memories.

I never owned an Atomic Man but he looks pretty neat p,I'll tell you I am amazed to this day at the fact they were making jeeps and other vehicles at 12inch scale.

I remember as a young kid (I was about 4 at the time) seeing the Mike Power commercial and wanted it in the worst way....so for Christmas my mom bought me what she thought was Mike Power....it wasn't....It was Bulletman instead, and I couldn't have been happier...

I never understood why the Palitoy version of Mike Power had flocked hair, while the US version had painted hair! I remember an issue of the defunct "Collecting Toys" magazine called that "a bionic step backwards".

Palitoy had a lot of influence on US Joe, they created flocking, Kung Fu grip and Eagle Eyes.

Really? Well, then you'd think the US would have caught on and flocked Mike Power.

Luvz me some Atomic Mike. Too bad his rubbery hands broke off.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.
