    The Incredible Dr Steel Commercial

Today is an epic day for Plaidstallions. I finally tracked down the film reel to a commercial that has haunted me since 1975 and I get to share it with all of you.

I remember it vividly, watching Space:1999 on my parent's black and white TV when this commercial aired. Already a fan of the Big Jim toy line, the concept of a villian (although he really isn't clearly defined as such) just captivated me. I needed this toy, I had to have it!

Sadly, my mother took one look at that bald head and tattoo and nixed the whole thing. It's another thread in the tapestry of why I'm a toy collector and also probably explains why I have no tattoos.
While I finally did get that Dr Steel, tracking down this ad makes me even happier. I'll be including it free with my DVD package going forward.

More Big Jim than you can handle!

      That's super!

When I found a Dr. Steel at a toy show in WI in 1990, for the life of me, I couldn't remember his name, so I called him Ironhand. (OK, I was close, right?). But sadly, his "steel" hand is no more. It split in half (right between the fingers, and I had to perform major surgery, (give him an arm from another broken Big Jim figure). I thought about changing his name, but decided against it.

Dr. Steel has a special place for me as well. I remember when he first came out. I was fascinated by his look. And what most don't realize, he was a stand-alone figure in the beginning. No Pack relation at all. He was just a new addition to the existing Big Jim line. I have that first edition box mine came in for Christmas. Loved him so much. Sadly I also remember his silver hand breaking on Christmas morning. We had to take him back after Christmas and get a replacement. But he held strong after that. Hey Brian, did you say we could watch that video? Because when I click on the image I just get the image, no commercial. Would LOVE to see that original footage. Thanks so much!!!

Man, that guy has a great face sculpt. I never that any Big Jim figures as a kid. I missed out!

No, she thought bald guys with tattoos were creeps.

Now they are everything, if they remake Kojak, it should be a guy with a big afro.

BTW I've always thought Mattel patterned Steel after character actor Robert Tessier.

That is a great commercial! There is no way my mom would have let me get him back in the day. I wasn't allow the KISS dolls either since there were too "naughty".

My mom said my father would throw them out if I brought them home. He was a big believer in the whole "Satan's Service" thing, probably still is....
