I find it interesting in an age where store checkout lanes are clogged with impulse purchases, why the rack toys have not seen a revival. To me it feels just as relevant today as it was back in the 60's and 70's. Perhaps even more so now.

I suspect it's 'cos everybody's afraid to release the rights to their stuff. So to get something like the old generic grocery store play food set with a "Hannibal" card would be WAY too pricey. Back in the day a lot of stuff was licensed out almost willy-nilly. It's probably the lasting ramifications of the '89 Batman. The film did SO WELL that EVERYBODY hoarded the rights to EVERYTHING.... for fear that they'd lose out on the next big comeback. (That's one of the reasons you're seeing so many old cartoons and shows come out on home video NOW, as opposed to years ago.)

There are tons of generic rack toys out there nowadays; but like most things they've been sequestered.... mostly to dollar stores and the like.
