Pod-Stallions Episode one: Growing up Who

I'm very happy to unveil Pod-Stallions, our new monthly podcast series which will be dedicated to discussing such important matters as Planet of the Apes week or long reminisces about ToyShop magazine.

Joining me each show will be my pal and co chair Jason Lenzi, who people might know from the great "Geek Shall Inherit" show.

We hope each month to pick a topic and relate how it felt to us in the day, including cringe inducing tales. All that and schoolyard rumors, action figures and more trivia than we should probably know.

That leads us to Episode one: Growing up...Who.

Listen or download episode one here

Jason and I are both crazy, obsessive Doctor Who nerds from childhood, but I watched it in Canada while he was in Minnesota, how did the experience differ? What was the catalyst for us to stop watching? Were we public about our obsession? Did visiting the dirty magazine store make a man out of Jason? All answers revealed in this double sized pilot episode.

Awesome. I honestly don't know Doctor Who from Doctor What, but I'm going to listen anyhow. I feel like I've been totally left out of something by missing out on this. I knew of the doctor, but other than a few random appearances on PBS, I have never watched a whole episode.

Pod Stallions is a very welcome addition to the ever-growing PS empire.

    Edited to add:

I listened, and I liked it. Again, I am a Who novice. I know the names of most of the actors, know what they look like, know what Daleks and Cybermen are, and that's it. BUT, I still enjoyed this. The love you two have for this property is very obvious and infectious. The fact that you could make it interesting to someone like me who has no real connection to the subject speaks volumes.

    I can't wait for more!

Oh and I heard that Bubblicicious rumor as well, so it got around!

I'm with Chris here. Except count me out for knowing the character names. Chris is more in the know than I am there. I didn't take notice of it as a kid, so when I finally did see it as an adult, the production values were too far removed for me to embrace it. So I missed out on getting that nostalgia aspect of the show. I've been wanting to look into modern translations, but honestly I would prefer to watch it with someone who has a background with it, than to go in cold turkey. Glad to see the pod casts returning though. Entertaining as always.

Tom Baker was what I got on PBS growing up. It frustrated me to no end that the best I could do for toys was dress up a SWAT guy in a hodge podge of Big Jim clothes and have him team with my Trek guys to fight my blue Star Team Zeroid. I only need to hear a few seconds of the intro to take me back. I mostly found the other Doctors through library books and VHS later.

I enjoyed the podcast. Honestly, I was not much of a Doctor Who fan as a kid. I am just finding the series now. If ony I had more time to watch them!

I look forward to the next podcast!

            Podcast was good!

Dr. Who was weird when I was a kid- I would watch it when nothing else was on- but recall getting bored pretty quick.

I've been a Doctor Who fan and collector since I was six and loved the podcast. I wanted to jump in and make comments as you all talked. I grew up in the rural South and had access to Target novelizations through a Waldenbooks at the nearest mall (in another town, 45 minutes away).

Oddly enough, I received Back Issue #63 today, and it features an article on Marvel's Doctor Who series.

Great podcast. Looking forward to more. BTW, Dynamite Entertainment is launching a new classic Battlestar Galactica comic book series starting in May. The first issue's cover art is done by Alex Ross. Would be great if were to kick off with an adaptation of the unproduced DeSanto/Singer teleplay.

This is fabulous. I've been so out of the loop lately I didn't even realise this podcast was happening 'til just now. Looking forward to more as well.

I thought the podcast was very entertaining. Even though I have minimal knowledge of Dr. Who, I wanted to give it a chance. I look forward to future episodes.

While I also have little knowledge of the subject matter I enjoyed it a lot. Great chemistry between Brian and Jason and I also enjoy any discussion of pre-internet collecting. I think many of us had some a cool store (or 2) we hit prior to the internet or Ebay.

Listening to it now, very entertaining! I admit that I don't have a huge amount of Who knowledge either, but your enthusiasm is infectious, and I really enjoyed hearing your stories about the early days of fandom and collecting that I too remember (Starlog magazine, ordering stuff through the mail and wondering when or if it would ever show up, early conventions, etc). Jason mentioned wanting to do something involving Bond merchandising in the 60's on a future show, and that is something I would be thrilled to listen to. Great job, guys.
