    Lost Star Trek Merchandise

I was thumbing through the 1979 Southbend catalog the other night (click on it to enlarge) and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of this stuff got made.

Southbend made some cool toys for the movie, particularly and electronic Enterprise that is still quite popular with collectors but I've never seen that figurine set.

That would be a shame because I've explained before, I kind of have a low level obsession with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, not so much the movie but the merchandise. I was nine when it came out and TOTALLY got wrapped up in the hype. I gleefully read the Marvel comic adaptation while eating my happy meal, hoping to pick up more Mego figures.

I think I fell asleep during the movie but who cared?

UPDATE: I've been told by several folks they remember having these toys, so it looks like there's nothing lost about these except that I don't own them. That will change, oh yes, that will....

"Low level obsession", that's a really good way to put it, it's kinda the way I feel about both ST:TMP and Black Hole, I love the merchandise, but not as much the films themselves (compared to Star Wars for example). Weird how that works.

The figurines are neat. I like how Spock is not in uniform (mixes up the monotony) and Kirk's drawing on the package seems lifted from the Season 3 promo photo of him on the transporter, not from TMP!

Yeah, the poster art board got made too. The '3-D' effect was pushing the foam board down, around the die-cut figures. Didn't work at all... but the art was beautiful.

If I didn't have those, I had a set that was really similar. There were a couple of years where my mom would buy my sister and I similar kits for holiday decorations and at one point I was blessed with Trek, Peanuts, and all sorts of elves and Santas.

                  Here's the Spock

                  and the Kirk

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Notice the phasers depicted in the poster? They made toys based on that design. The show up from time to time on eBay. I almost had a set but was outbid. They have a play feature similar to the old Mego phaser game and preceded the Laser Tag game. Starlog ran an article on the props they're based on once. There's 2 auctions going on for sets right now:

I used to see those figures and the 3D board around. I got the South Bend phaser set, I could never get them to work but thought it was great that they really looked a lot like the TMP phaser (except for the Trek title in the side)
