70s Santa Explosion

Let's kick the week off right with a sampling of Santa suits and other bric a brac from the era when I knew he was real. I will say that suits like captain eyebrows above, give me the willies. It probably has to do with a childhood viewing of "Tales from the Crypt", not the HBO show, that British one.

i never lived in a house with a fireplace until 1998. I think it is a more regional thing too. I grew up in NE TX and NOOOOOBODY I knew had a fireplace....

I still have a Santa and Reindeer set as seen in the last pic (#8). Unfortunately, the flimsy plastic stake bottoms are broken off on some of them. I've been meaning to do something new with them for years...

Wow! Looking at the first two Santas with the fireplaces...dead ringers for Lloyd Bridges & Ed Asner!

Oh, imagine the days of having a cardboard fireplace and being satisfied! Have we as society progressed, really?

Chocolate Santa is kinda creepy, with his pop eyes, like that guy that's always on the Ripley's shows...

I picked-up a set of the plastic candles at the antique show this weekend. Passed on a couple of popcorn santas and Frostys that I kind of regret now. Still chasing the elusive cardboard fireplace.

I loved all the Christmas product back in the late 60's and 70's. Heck I still have Diener Santa erasers from when you could get those at school. Fun memories.

When I first moved back to CA in '92, I was living in a studio apartment. I had one big blank wall, and decided to put a fireplace on it. I got some of that corrugated brick paper from the discount store, and put a construction paper fire in it. I used to babysit 3 kids every week and made them stockings, (as well as me and my mom), and hung them on the fireplace. It looked really cute.

We've had the lighted candles for years. Our biggest probelm with them is they kept blowing over and the bulbs would break. This year we finally have something to anchor them to. Nice to see them out this year.

I always anchor my blow-molds with rocks, bricks or gravel. Most of then have a big enough opening to put some big heavy rocks in them.

I love this! This is Christmas to me.

A few years back, I searched for and found the cardboard fireplace we had when I was a kid. It's a piece of poop, but I love it. Just put it up this weekend. You know I think I relate cheap, tacky decoration with Christmas. Its as much a part of the holidays as the tree and the presents.

I own that exact Santa suit--$14 from Sears & Roebuck in the early '70s.

My grandfather used it for several seasons, then my mother (!) with the neighborhood kids.

I took it to college & upgraded the trim, belt & accessories & started doing a custom beard--I used it for about ten years at school, work, and even a few private parties.
