    Japan trip toy pick up

Just got back from Japan and picked up this guy from the Mandarake store in Nagoya. Not really a Japan toy expert, but I believe it is an Ultraman vinyl figure. Similar to Bullmark but different brand. It's pre internet days atleast cause there's no www. address on it anywhere. I thought the Header was cool with the cartoon aliens. Didn't see any Popy or Megos anywhere. Any help from you Japan experts would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is an M1 / Marusan Ultraman. Cool header card with the UltraQ logo!

Any idea on how old ? That's about what I paid for it.

It's not old. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. They repop/rerelease these figures alot in Japan. Been awhile since I have followed the brands (M1/Marusan/Marmit, etc...) as it became headache inducing with all the variations/store exclusive/toy show releases.

I've never been to the Nagoya Mandarake store, how big is that one? You find any other Japanese goodies?

If you can only hit just one, I'd recommend the one in Shibuya. I might be a bit sentimental as that was the branch where I broke my Mandarake cherry, but I love the whole huge underground toy cavern feel of that location.

I think that it is a reissue of one of the earliest Ultraman figures. Congrats on great trip!
Here's a good website on Ultraman vinyl-page down

Just got back from another business trip(busy right now). The Mandarake store in Nagoya is 4 stories high, a good size building. They didn't have a lot of stuff that would interest non Japanese toy collectors around the Museum here. I did see 2 Mattel Shogun Warriors - 1 boxed for about $400.00 and 1 loose for about $300.00. Also saw a remote control R2D2 from the 70's in a Japanese box for $70.00. I almost went for that one. Like, I said I'm no Japanese toy expert, I was hoping to find some Popy's or maybe a Bullmark King Kong in bag. They have tons of these vinyl figures, some old, some new. I know a little about Ultra Man, so I bought this guy. Maybe he's not worth a whole lot, but he looks cool and will remind me of my trip, which was a blast.

Sounds like a good one. You're right, unless you have an interest in Japanese toys, the Mandarake stores aren't quite as much as a treasure trove. Of course, I love Japanese toys, so I always have lots of fun in these stores. If you like Godzilla, Ultraman, vinyl kaiju, chogokin, etc. you'll go nuts, because they sell a crapload of those, cabinet after endless cabinet full. But the only 8" Popy I've ever seen in their stores is Battle Japan, the most common one. None of the others, no Bullmark boxed POTA, no Mego King Kong stuff, I did see a US carded Mego Hulk once though.

Also saw a remote control R2D2 from the 70's in a Japanese box for $70.00. I almost went for that one
The Takara one that fires discs? I bought one of those at the Shibuya Mandarake a couple years ago. It's a great toy and $70 is a good price for a boxed one. I'm always on the lookout for Takara Star Wars toys over there, but this is the only one I've found so far.

Yeah, it was the one that fired discs. I loved looking at all the vinyl monsters and Japanese characters, but I'm lost as to who is who(other than Godzilla of course). I can see why collectors love Japanese toys - so colorful and varied characters. One question for you, I saw some carded outfits for a 12 inch figure. They reminded me of the Captain Action outfits, except Japanese characters(Ultraman,Battle of the Planets). What figure do they go on ? These outfits were priced at about $60-$80.

Sounds like Henshin Cyborg outfits. But based on those prices, they'd have to be the reissues from the 90's-00's instead of the original 70's outfits, which are very pricey these days, especially at Mandarake.
