    Creepy Creatures

These coffin shaped puzzles show that Monster Love was alive and well in '75. I don't own any of these but I've been sorely tempted at many a toy show/flea marker/antique mall.

It's kind of odd that Hyde looks like Frederic March, Dracula still resembles Lugosi somewhat, but Frankenstein looks more like the description from the novel. Hardly any manufacturer resisted putting some of Universal's look in there.

Whoa, that Jeckyll and Hyde is a mock up, and very odd one at that. The released puzzle features him looking reminiscent the Batman villain Two Face. Here's the production version (there are three photos if you click through):

It is interesting to note that the front side of the puzzle has the specter of March haunting the Doctor, while the flip side illustration of Hyde looks nothing like him. The Dracula puzzle itself is, in part, referenced from the classic Lugosi stalking pose (the hands to shoulders), and the character is wearing a medallion (which is one of Universal's copyrighted elements), but the illustrator gave him the widows peak and a very different facial structure. I've always thought he looks a bit like George Hamilton, though Love At First Bite wouldn't come along for seveal more years.

Speaking of the illustrator, these were created by Harold Schull, he of Mego Star Trek fame, creator of the cover to Famous Monsters of Filmland #81 on which Uncle Forry is being strangled, and, of course, the designer of the Micronauts packaging.

        Hey!

I remember those! Got them at a corner store WAY back in the day.
