    1976 Remco Toys Catalog

Remco was a division of Azrak Hamway and while AHI made more of the dimestore "Impulse' items, the Remco brand was used to promote toys of a higher quality. In 1976, the company attempted to infiltrate the action figure category (the McDonalds characters), Games (Magic Hat) along with their usual children's role play items such as Star Trek and Space:1999 utilty belts.
Check out the 1976 Remco Catalog for more goodness.

And be sure to check out the Earthquake Tower Playset, this is a somewhat morbid toy no doubt inspired by the Irwin Allen movies of the era....

Interesting Brian. Also interesting to see how (as you mention) in a few years they'd take the utility belts and CSF and pretty much just expand on what was here.

One quick note: The McDonaldland playset has the Utility Belt text.

Was REMCO always a division of AHI or did AHI acquire Remco in the 70's? The reason I ask is there are Remco toys going back to the 50's or maybe earlier and I normally associate AHI with the 70's.....

The Remco name was purchased by AHI in the early 1970's for a sum like 10k if I'm not mistaken.

Wow, I would have liked to have that Star Trek Utility belt! That Earthquake building is an interesting concept, but not something I think I would have played with.

Great catalogue pics, I have a few of those toys in my collection. I'd also love to get hold of a Star Trek Utility Belt, very cool!

I recall drooling over those Remco 1999 and Trek utility belts in the grocery store (Winn Dixie I think it was). Even then, I was aware that the Trek items on the belt were essentially the same as the ones in the TOS AMT Exploration model kit (which I had), but I still wanted that belt set.

Ah, Earthquake Tower! A good friend had this, and there was many a day that it, as the Wayne Foundation building, with Comics Action Heroes on the ledges, was attacked by Godzilla and Rodan until the heroes summoned Dragun, Diamos and Mazinger to the scene. A fall from that shaking building is how the Hulk lost his leg!

I had this as a kid and I remember having a great time with it, especially the zip line. The building only lasted two or three earthquakes. While searching through my old toys a few years back I still remember finding a few of the people. They were yellow and red though not as pictured on the ad.

I had the Magic Hat...less magical than I'd hoped. I wanted a trip to Lidsville.

Good to know -- I wanted that hat back in the day

I think the Batman Utility Belt is cool -- to bad they didn't put a pouch instead of a gun.

I never saw that Earthquake tower before. If I was aware of that toy as a kid, I would have definitely wanted it!

About seven years ago, after collecting all of the Mcdonaldland figures loose, I came across a complete set of figures MOC for $120.00. I couldn't resist. Shortly thereafter I purchased the playset complete in box for about $40.00. I was always charmed by them in the 70's and was glad to finally land them. I've been pretty amazed at some of the current prices for these figures. It seems their value has only increased since those reproductions were released. I know McDonalds was sued and lost for making these characters look too much like the HR Puff n' Stuff that was mildly popular at the time (That was the reason for their demise). But recently I've noticed many of the characters, coming back. I bet McDonalds found a way to get control of the copyrights and can use those characters again if they so choose. Wouldn't it be great to see new commercials using the vintage McDonaldland characters? That would be wild.
