Barbie and Ken: The good times

They were quite literally magnetically attached in the early 1970s. Since their break up I believe Ken is living in a studio apartment with a Brenda from "Beverly Hills 90210" doll.

I don't know why this concept didn't last. I mean, Barbie has always had cool accessories, and she could never hold them since these came out? Why? I guess we'll never know.

BTW...Ken would never be seen w/ that B****. I have the Brandon doll, and he told me so himself!

Definitely early in the morn--I thought it said "Busty Barbie and her Friends" when I first saw it.

Time to get some coffee and start reading more carefully...

My guess is Mattel feared small children would chew on the hands and choked or be poisoned by the magnets?

Even though my wife is a font of Barbie knowledge, I didn't know about these. If so, Barbie and Midge would be double-dating with Magnetic Batman and Robin right now!

Ah the days when Ken had that magnetic personality...

Okay, I totally read this post wrong (it was early in the morning) and thought these Barbies had magnets. They do not. My bad.

I asked Cindy why they discontinued them, and she said the thumb joints didn't hold up to play well. The wrist joints got really loose as well.

                Cost saving measure I'm sure.

Same reason they quit the superior Ken rubber band construction model with swivel neck.

You would think Mattel would bring this feature back. Oh wait. I'm talking about Mattel. Most of the stuff they do makes no sense. Never mind.

                    Mattel history...fun for days !

I always thought of them as Barbie and Ken with the Kung- Foo grip ! No magnets, just a hinge, and given its size and location, given to wear and early failure. Besides, back when these came out, Mattel was in financial trouble, like almost everyone else in the 70s, and gimmicks like these kept them in business.

That and an occasional book-cookin' with 'Bill and Hold' practices for everyone from Toys R Us on down...too bad that's out there like cheap neon during a simple audit.

(sorry for the misspelling, but 'kung-correct word' gets eaten by the asterisks)
