1979 Parker Brothers ROM: SpaceKnight Press Kit

One of the biggest splashes in the toy industry is when game (and nerf) giant Parker Brothers decided to make an action figure.

Not just any action figure but an electronic space hero with bells and

whistles not seen before. Rom was truly a toy ahead of his time and while he didn't prove to be the smash that Parker Brothers hoped, thanks to a relationship with Marvel comics, he became a much beloved comic book character.

Cool. I never owned ROM as a kid, but I still bought the first 10 or so issues of the comic book.

The comic was surprisingly good, although the last couple cycles (starting when the witch-wraiths took over) could be uneven. It seemed they were trying for a horror type story, but kept getting held back every so often.

I remember Rom well. I never owned one but I remember why he never interested me. As an action figure he was fairly limited by his articulation and size. I couldn't see a way to incorporate him into play time with other figure lines. And as a sound effect device, he didn't offer anything you didn't already see and hear from the onslaught of effects gadgetry that was out at the time. The comic was more interesting than the toy.

Ah, ROM, you were well-loved by me---at least in comics form! I never owned one of the actual figures, but I have the whole comic series. It had a few rough patches, but overall, for a series based on a short-lived toy, it was pretty damn good. Of course, nobody rendered a better ROM than Michael Golden. I always wanted to see a ROM/Micronauts crossover, but it never happened...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I wonder if Hasbro would ever consider to bring him back?

I love ROM--he's been on my want list for a while. Could care less about the comic book--give me the toy!

I was always puzzled by his lack of an enemy in toy form.

Still got my ROM (wish I still had the box, though), got the whole run of the comics, too! Love the heck out of that character!
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

I loved the comic book back in the day and know nothing about the toy
but isn't ROM part of the ACTION MAN line in the UK?

Much like the 12" Battlestar Galactica figures, cool but limited. I think I just used him as a giant robot to kick the crap out of my Star Wars guys and to battle it out with my Cylon.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
