Those gone but not forgotten Retailers..

Anyone else remember those get retail store that are long closed or those mom and pop stores that where great.
I remember Woolworths as a child of the 70's. I collected Aluminum cans and got them recycled so I could buy SW figures . I vividly remember a dump bin of Underoos. Then there was Circus World that was the bomb. I remember those HUGE plush snakes hanging from the ceiling. I place I remember the Adam computer and all those toys. Only to be replaced by KB, a terrible toy store.
And finally , Hill's department store . I would run into that place in my hometown of Decatur, Al and check out the endcap displays where they had great toy scenes set up. I still remember the Speeder bike display i wanted to this day. ( only got the speeder part now) My sister worked there and i kick myself everyday for not getting into store displays MUCH earlier. Hills also was the place of the " great Cabbage Patch" rush where people where fighting to get those stupid dolls. My sister remembers that too well.
Walmart ws not the giant it ws and Toys R US was a wonderland of toys with employees in striped , colorful vests.

I long for the past way to much....I still search EBAY for old bags from these stores to put my vintage toys inside off and remember back to a better , less violent world.

We had Woolco, Dominion Play World, Toy City, Pinnochio's (which had five locations at one point) and so many cool mom and pop places to buy toys....

Jupiter's (a Kresge Co. store), Bargain Center, Tots to Teens, Grandway and Stars are some defunct stores where I remember buying toys, particularly Megos.

I remember Two Guys being mentioned on those TV commercials, but I never went into one, (that I know of). I remember Woolworth and Woolco though. Esp. during the holidays. But as far as toys, there was a little mom and pop type of toy store 2 blocks from my house, (darned if I can remember the name), w/ a HUGE display window. I used to pass there on my way from day camp, and Sunday school and just dream. They always had all the latest toys there. That's where I got my first Action Jackson. Here in Oakland, there used to be JJ Newberry's; it was a lot like Woolworth's. It even had a lunch counter in the back. And being from New York, I miss Macy's during the holidays. I remember their toy department used to be fantastic. I wonder if it still is?

I dunno about over the pond but here in the sunny UK every high street or shopping precinct/mall is frightingly familiar, with the same shops selling exactly the same stuff no matter where you go. The little shops are disappearing, no more "family" toy shops, model shops or shops that you'd go in just 'cos they looked so goddamn interesting.
For any variety you have to look online...even for dvd and cds...if its not in the charts/new release or a big money spinner you won't get it. Even toy shops will not stock stuff unless it is tie in material or a sure fire money maker. I can understand from a business point of view but as far a consumer choice goes over here ...you can forget about it. I won't list the shops that I miss because it would be a very, very, very long list.

In the early 70s, THE store where I got all my best stuff was Kresge. For me, this covered Megos from Star Trek to POTA, model kits, Kenner Bionic stuff, etc. Somewhere in the late 70s, we got a Lionel Playworld and that became the source. We had Zayers, which later became Ames, which later dissapeared altogether. Circus World in the mall was also a favorite, but always more expensive than larger retailers. We also had a small store next to the grocery store called Toy King- not sure if that was a chain or not.

When I was a kid, I got my toys from Odd Lots, Toys and Things, and Alexander's. As I got a littler older, Zayre and Lionel's Playworld.

Heck I never entered a TRU until I was 16 yrs old (in 1992)
