Colouring Book Theatre: Marlin Perkins Wild Kingdom

Marlin Perkins Wild Kingdom" by Whitman
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom will forever remind me of Sunday afternoons at my grandparents in that wasteland of TV that limited channels brought you in the 1970s.

It was an oasis between Lawrence Welk and golf. Oddly I am obsessed with Lawrence Welk shows now.

Even as a kid I knew the show was a little old fashioned looking and educational but it staved off boredom and it endeared itself to me.

I had high hopes for comedy gold with this book but I was in for a surprise when it arrived:

    More after the jump.

It's nothing but well drawn, well written pages about animals. You could slap a new cover on this and sell it today. You may ask yourself "What the hell were you expecting?" Let me illustrate that for you:

Yes, I drew this and you're right, I'm an idiot but honestly, I was hoping for some pictures of Marlin and Jim in this thing. I want to color an old man!

The majority of this book oddly enough is racoons, here is what it looks like in my attic.

I could go on but there is little comedy to be mined here, which is the direct opposite of next week's entry. Happy Father's day!

"While Jim in is the swamp with the croc I'll watch safely from the boat as he tries to count the teeth".

I remember watching this at my Grandparents when we'd go over there for Sunday dinners. Good times.

How many degrees is Rallygirl from Marlin Perkins?

        1. Marlin Perkins, director of Lincoln Park Zoo 1944-1962
        2. George Irving, Lincoln Park Zoo zoologist and the hands you often saw passing the animals from off camera to Marlin Perkins.
        3. Irene Irving, wife of George Irving and neat old lady who, from the death of her husband until her own death, attended Church with Rallygirl.

I have mentioned in past threads, that I collect costume jewelry and my best pieces of Eisenberg were gifts from a woman at Church. Irene always told me that the set of earring she gave me had been a gift to her from Marlin Perkins.

I had this as a kid. My grandparents bought it for me because I loved Wild Kingdom so much. Good memories, thanks!

Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was a staple at my house as well... though as a toddler I refered to it affectionately as "Mo-Chi-Mo"... as a kid I always thought where the heck is this mysterious Omaha? Of course wife, born in Nebraska, always thought Mississippi was a made up place to scare children

I wish they would show this and Wild, Wild World of Animals on TV again. I know that a lot of the stuff they said back then has been proven wrong, but they were great shows.
Zombie? Vampire? Evil clown?!? Yes, please.

When I was very little I thought Marlin Perkins' name was Mutual Ofomaha since he was the host of the show and I was too little to know of corporate sponsorship.
                    It's all good!

There are some episodes on DVD and Netflix. Used to watch it and like it too, it's part of the my 70's TV experience.
