    To the Web Copter?

Here we have one of the last uses of the AHI Helicopter molds (which had been used for Planet of the Apes, Batman, SWAT even the Hulk!) in the mid 1980s AHI/Remco snapped up the rights to the Archie Red Circle comics heroes such as "The Web" here, the result were some pretty middling, kinda chubby, action figures and rack toys such as this.

While I see the "Mighty Crusaders" figures a lot on the secondary market, the rack toys seem to never surface. This copter is the first I've found in years. I should mention I used to own this on the card but I gave it to a good friend because in 1999, I didn't have an inkling that one day I'd have a website or be working on a book or anything...

I was all about the AHI copters in the 70s, but I never saw any Mighty Crusaders versions of them. I did have the figures though. Their generic nature gave me the ability to make them who I wanted to in Super Powers/Secret Wars play scenarios.

I remember seeing all of the Mighty Crusaders figures and other rack toy items @ a Dollar General store back in the day. I'm talking about a huge wall display. I remember thinking " Who are the Mighty Crusaders?" So, I passed them up. At the time, I was the perfect age to snatch them too. Just didn't know anything about them. Once and only time I ever saw them. Wish I had a camara to snap a pic back then.

            Never heard of this character.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

The characters had almost no exposure in the 1970s, save for these digests:

I had these as a kid, they consisted of mostly 60s reprints (with the "Groovy" dialogue changed) and some ultra violent Gray Morrow reboot of the Black Hood. I loved these characters as a result.

Archie comics launched Red Circle I think in 1983 to revive interest in the characters, it was a pretty straight but slightly lackluster rendition and resulted in this merch.

I had one issue of Mighty Crusaders, and several issues of The Fly. One had all new stories by Steve Ditko, the other reprints from the 50s. It was enough to make me really interested in DC's Impact! Comics. I thought some of those were really good, but they trashed the titles before giving them a chance to grow.

                  Nifty!

....but that helicopter looks like it's just WAITING for an excuse to self-destruct.

I remember having a toy helicopter from the "Rack". But this one looks like a cadillac compared to the one I owned. Mine had a flat body with Batman a mear sticker on the body. The pull string was wrapped around a spindal and suspended on a handle no thicker than a ruler. I think I got less than a few hours play out of it. Before it flew itself into the brickface of our house.
Looking at Brians sight. I remember having the Batman friction powered stuntcycle. I had more fun removing Bats from the cycle and playing with him.

Wow, that's pretty freakin' cool, I don't remember Mighty Crusaders at all but I love those oddball superheroes and rack toys from the 1970s/1980s, so I'm gonna check this out a bit more....
