    1978 Mattel Pulsar Catalog

1978 saw the return of Mattel's Pulsar the Ultimate Man od Adventure returned to I guess fight crime with his non descript powers. This year he would be joined by his new foe Hypnos. While Pulsar sold well for a toy with no TV other than his TV commercials, things were starting to fall flat for his look alike Steve Austin and Pulsar's adventures would sadly end in 1978.

I have Pulsar and the Life Systems set. Sadly, it's missing a few pieces, and really doesn't work that well.

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Or as my friend Chad calls him: "PULSAR, the hero who can't go out in the sun!"

Pulsar was cool. I didn't have him, but my best friend did. (He had the Life Systems center, too.)

As a kid, I thought it was strange that his face flipped up to insert the "brain disc" thing. I always thought it would have made more sense for the back of his head to open instead. It was obvious when I got older that they had been going for a "Maskatron/Fembot" kind of thing with the removable face. I just never made that connection back then since I knew Pulsar wasn't a "bionic" character, so in my 6 year old mind they were completely separate. (I was probably a strange kid in that I never "mixed" toy lines when I played.)

A fun figure. I still have my original one and I got Anthony (aka Toyroom) to make me the perfect reproduction box. If you guys have a loose one, you should ask him to make you one too. Just flat out incredible. Every bit as good as the original. Graphics are stunning.

....although having them front-load makes more sense if he's putting his own in. Which is kinda weird, but hey; he's a dude with visible organs, and apparenty no digestive tract.

I still have my original one, but I took the brain disks and used them in my AMT communicators I put together so that I would have "spinning" disks when I flipped the communicator open. I don't have those anymore. I do have Pulsar and his not so in one piece box. He guested as a giant, super human that the crew of the Enterprise would encounter from time to time in their 8" adventures
                    It's all good!
