I have such a soft spot for alot of these comics, as they were favorites when I was a kid. Shogun Warriors, Micronauts, Team America, etc., I still pull out those books and read 'em now and then!

like animation based on toys it can co either way. I actually subscribed to Team america and i never bought the toys. Same with Masters of the universe i liked the cartoon and never collected the toys

it was all based on the GIJOE marketing model. create a toy line and comarket with comics and animation to "sell" the back story to the kids

and of course anything Marvel animcation/sunbow did had to have a corresponding comic

Prior to GI Joe, you had the Micronauts and Shogun Warriors. Even before that, Marvel had published an Evel Knievel comic book which was packaged with several of the Ideal toys. After Ideal dropped Knievel, they wanted to continue with the line, which led to Team America. Marvel launched the Team America comic series about the same time as GI Joe. Oh yeah, let's not forget about ROM the spaceknight and DC's Masters Of the Universe. It still goes back to Ideal's EK line and Marvel. Surprised no one ever did comics based on CB McHaul or Kenner's TTP Wild Riders lines.
