I'm waiting to hear back from the ol' Marx guys to be sure, but I think there was a painted box set released back in the day too. Marx did this for some of their military figures (Soldiers of the World) back in the day, and I'm sure I have heard of a Marvel set done this way as well. Always ahead of their time, Marx was making special items with collectors in mind way back then.

Nice way to hijack a thread. You may want to move this post to the Marketplace section...that's where sales threads usually go."When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

I got some of these in the early 70's when I was a kid, and they were definitely all available in different colours by that point. I remember having an orange Spidey, lime green Cap, dark blue Hulk and red Thor and Daredevil. I remember buying them out of a big dump bin full of them , loose, not boxed or tagged or anything. My favourite was Daredevil, because there was no Mego version. I was always curious as to the origins of the painted versions myself, I do know that I never saw any in stores that were painted.Comment

A few of us had this discussion on the board within the past year. I did some research into this and a few notions that have been taken as fact are actually backwards...
I have the original Marvelmania solicitation. 6" and primer/flat gray were first. They came in two sets...
Set A - Spidey, Hulk, Iron Man
Set B - Cap, Thor, DD
1.50 per set with .50 cents for postage
Released in 1970.
6-inch was the original scale, not 8-inch. IMO, 8" became accepted as the "legit" size because that was what was in abundance throughout the 70's. I also tend to believe the scale changed because of WGSH.
The majority of painted figures that pop up are 6-inch and have a red-base underneath. Red and gray are the predominant 6" scale. Green and Orange are predominantly 8". I have an 8" red, and have seen 8" silver/gray, but never 6" orange/green, even though it's possible due to the Mexican productions.
So the primer/gray were sold via Marvelmania, and the painted run were most likely the first retail version. Then the scale flipped to 8" and became a four-color release line dumped into whatever store would carry them throughout the 70's.
When you look at the character grouping, DD sticks out because up until that point, Marvel really blocked-grouped the majority of its licenses. Then, when you look at the stances, IMO, the DD mold was supposed to be Spidey and Spidey's mold was supposed to be Namor. I used to think the Spidey stance was supposed to resemble the Tarzan swing from the Friendly Neighborhood credits, but the DD stance is almost classic Silver Age Spidey. Then, when you compare the Marx Spidey stance to the Silver Age Namor Logo...

Finally heard back from my Marx buddy on these. Here it is straight from the old factory in his words (and opinions about the newer Mexican stuff):
"the regular original US colors were the blue, orange, red and green. The gray/silver were the ones you sent away for. (Cap here--I assume he means the Marvel fan club ones?)
The Mexican re-issues can be tricky, as some are similar in color to original (lately lots of red have been showing up along with silver), and who knows if over the years they've run them real close to originals in color, as only some of them occasionally show up on ebay and markets over here.
I personally believe all the oddball versions that have shown up in recent years are bogus, either Mexican crap or knock-off (especially the metallic painted versions, and then some actually made of metal), and I also personally would only stick to the basic colors (not even the silver/gray) to be safe." (cap again--Mikes advice to collectors)
Mike told me he even still has the original design drawings too. He's going to see if he can find them and send me some scans. If and when he does I'll post them here."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

I had a nice Red Ironman and DD, and a Blue Cap.. As a kid I would have painted 'em, but I did know what paints to use.. I knew enamel wouldn't work.., and didn't have much access to other paints.
I used them as statues with my Megos, like if Grey Gargoyle would attack.., but they didn't turn gray.
dPeace.. Through Superior Firepower.
