    >Kids growing up in the 60's and 70's DEFINITELY had more common sense than they do now. Today's kids are too stupid to know how to properly handle a hobby knife, or paint, or glue, because they are so "protected" from everything.

It was in the 60's that they stopped including glue with the model kit 'cos folks were stealing them and sniffing....

....and the glass thing is a precaution vs getting sued. Sure; the amount used in any individual glass is minimal, but the designers didn't intend for them to survive and be used for 30 years. While the levels of exposure is STILL pretty minimal (unless you got one that the paint is flaking off of) it could still be seen as a contributing factor.... or at least a POTENTIAL contributing factor to a poisoning. Better safe than sorry. (Or sued.)

My mother-in-law has tiny (5 oz.?) Tom and Jerry glasses from the 70s that she uses as 'juice glasses' - No doubt they contain lead as well...
Maybe I ought to tell her not to use them anymore...I'm not so concerned for the old man though, nah, he is an old combat vet (R. Lee Ermey basically) - a freefall from a plane into a pit of stones wouldnt kill that bast@rd! (I'm not joking here at all - the guy throws holds and grapples with me, his grip is like a friggin vise - I am close to 7', nearly 400 lbs., and 37 - he is 6', 170, and 78 - not too damned shabby!)
Sorry - the old man's sturdiness has NOTHING to do with lead poisoning concerns....

I can see both sides of the issue here - I agree that many societal factors and the 'coddling/stunted growth' of many modern children have given them FAR less of a HARD SHELL than most of US have, I also believe that things like wearing bike helmets and using safety belts have little to do with potential lead poisoning - complete apples and oranges -

IE: A person recommending that you put on a helmet before they cracked you with a tire iron is VASTLY different from a person slowly and secretly poisoning your meals and drinks....

      Take care -

My thoughts are this: The glasses were found to contain lead that exceeded the limits that are considered acceptable. The newer glasses were recalled, and the older glasses were mentioned in the articles, since they were part of the research too.

It's more than likely that unless the glass is flaking paint anywhere, you aren't digesting harmful lead, but why take the chances? Best to put them on the shelf.

In other words, yes, the media does like a juicy scare to circulate from time to time, but the danger is potentially real.

There are like a million other drinking glasses in the world that don't have lead or cadmium. I think I'll use those ones instead and leave the potential poisons on the shelf to look pretty.

Collecting them and displaying and using them for pencil holders (etc.)
is cool and all... but what really bugs me is that it's actually, truly FUN
for to me to actually USE the glasses to drink from.

Maybe I'm just trying to right a childhood wrong (my Mom throwing out
my McDonaldLand glasses) but whatever the case it sucks for me to
not to be able to drink out of 'em.

            Shucks.
