    Aurora Monster Models Catalog

It almost doesn't seem fair to talk about Monster Toys and not bring up one of the most popular and influential of them all, the Aurora Monster kits. So today's update is a look at the 1975 Aurora Glow in the Dark Classic Movie Monsters Catalog. As an added bonus we have shots from the collection of Charlie Balicki including boxed and built up versions of these classic items.

    Have a spooooky weekend folks!

I display my Monogram reissues of Frankie, Drac, and Wolfie every year at Halloween. I had a lot of fun working on them back in high school. There's just something about building a monster, and going nuts with the dry-brushing over fur and veins and such.

No matter how many resin and vinyl kits are released, these are the best monster models ever made, and will ever be made.

Now if only one of these new companies would pull their heads out of their butts and re-issue Big Frankie.

The only Aurora models I ever had as a kid were the glow in the dark Frankenstein, and "Monsters of the Movies" Rodan and Ghidorah. I remember really wanting more of the monster models though (and the superhero ones too). I agree, the best monster models ever made.

I still have my 60s non-glow versions of Godzilla and Kong...maybe I should dig them out again!

I still have my Ghidorah, amateur paint job and all. Sadly, my father sat on my Rodan model and destroyed it. D'oh!

Wow! Apart from my Prehistoric Scenes, those were the only actual Aurora monters I had as well ( - even ordered from Famous Monsters' Captain Company)! Well, I had the Monogram reissue of Aurora's Godzilla as well. Still have that, lovingly restored about 10 years ago. Ghidra's been rebuilt as well, and has a Polar Lights reissue base (recast, I should say, since they're a bit smaller-scale.) My childhood Rodan was too fragile, and eventually scattered.

But I've really grown to love the classic Aurora monsters, and have picked up a couple here & there over the years. Thanks for the retrospective, Brian! LMK if you ever wanna do Prehistoric Scenes. (I even have a couple of prototypes!)

Oh, I always wanted to get some of those Prehistoric Scenes models too, I forgot about those!

The funny thing was that, as fragile as they were, I often played with the Rodan and Ghidrah models as actual toys, they had movable parts and all. That's because I wished there were actual figures of them that I could buy but there wasn't any, so I had to settle for what I had (at the time I never even dreamed that half a world away in Japan there were a bunch of Godzilla vinyl figures made).

                      Hee heee!

Those were fantastic kits! I used to love going to the downtown Playworld store; 'cos the front was all model kits, and they'd have all them nifty painted Aurora boxes on display. I've almost finished my Prehistoric Scenes set, still working on my Monster Scenes set, and I WAS resisting the urge to get these ones.

Not that my resistance lasted too long. Turns out I already had most of the rare ones; so one day I"m gonna finish the set. Then finish painting them. Right now Dracula is the only one I've got painted.

                      *sigh*
