    Saturday Morning Adventures

One of the things that made going back to the school in the fall more tolerable growing up was the promise of a new fall schedule of cartoons on Saturday mornings on the Big 3 networks.

Around August of every year while your parents were checking the back to school flyers, comic books began to give you and early taste of the type of programming that you could look forward to in the fall. I used to covet this and of course, plan my weekend entertainment in advance.

These were exciting times that I'm sad my kids can't really experience. I decided to create a gallery devoted to those special ads that still give me tingles when I read them:

I didn't watch any of the ones pictured. I have watched Clue Club and Spider-Woman on YouTube, though.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

I always loved those ads in comic books and TV Guide. I remember watching Spider-Woman but never seen any of the others until recently. I caught a few of the Robonic Stooges on Boomerang.
Read my blog at Moongem Comics about comics, toys and more.

I remember seeing the ads in the comic books and always getting excited about the new shows.

Does anyone remember the prime time specials the networks would run, previewing their Saturday morning line-ups? I'm pretty sure this foggy recall did, in fact, happen, but they get foggier each year. I can remember nerdily going through the TV guide, planning my journey from channel to channel to make sure I saw all the cool shows I wanted. That, fo course, always led to the pre-VCR decisions when two cool shows went head-to-head in the same time slot.
          WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

I always hated lineup changes. I had my shows I liked and wanted them at the same time in the same order forever!

Yep, sure do.. For a few years they had them on prime-time Friday nights. 'Course it got tough when all three networks (..remember those days....) had it at the SAME time Friday night, so you had to surf then too..!!

It was during the days of 'Waldo Kitty', 'Space Nuts' and other '70s favorites. I believe they only did those prime-time specials for a few years, then the ratings must have tanked...

^ They had those up into the mid-80s, because I specifically remember not knowing Super Friends was coming back on in 85 until I saw a commercial for that Friday-night preview, and the corresponding ad in TV Guide.

I loved those. I also remember the one from 79 that featured Plastic Man.

I remember watching those specials right up until the mid 1980s, even when I chose to sleep in on Saturdays.

I think the one in '84 had Menudo and Mary lou Retton on it, it's when I realized that I maybe too old for such fare.

A little net research shows that these continued well into the 90's (except NBC who stopped them in them in '89). They skipped a couple years, notably from around '77-78 until around '83. That would be key for me because I would have watched in '77 and '78, but wouldn't have noticed their return in '83.

Here's a horrible clip of Weird Al and Scooby and Scrappy Doo hosting ABC's in '83. I have no memory of 'Turbo Tenn,' but like I said, I was sleping in by that point.

The live parts of ABC's 1989 hosted by the cast of 'Perfect Strangers', but no clips.

Turbo Teen was another reason I longed for 70s nostalgia in the mid 1980s.

I have a vague memory of those specials. They used to do them for regular prime-time grown-ups shows as well.

Look at that ad! Mystery Island starring a re-vamped Lost In Space Robot Costume!

I remember those specials fondly. I remember the one where Fi and Fum (Krofft's Lost Saucer) were hosting, and Fi didn't believe there was such a planet as Earth. I remember the one the Brady Kids hosted and their cartoon premiered. I vaguely recall the one Burns and Schieber hosted and Rick Springfield was on that one plugging Mission Magic, (man I wish I could find that one!)
