I Went To Bed With Barry Manilow Last Night

I guess its not technically a toy, but for me its part and parcel of my toy collecting- I finally picked up a portable 8-track player I've been gunning for-

SO last night when I went to bed, I set up on my night stand with the only 8-track I could find- Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits Vol.1. And let me tell the man had a LOT of hits! As I sat there reading my book, I couldn't help laughing at myself for enjoying so thoroughly, this moment of geekery.

      That's awesome Bill!

I found mine last summer at an antique mall.

Then I found this one a few months back!

I love groovy 8 track players!

About ten years ago I was at a thrift store in North Carolina when I spied a TNT/Plunger 8 track player on a shelf with an 8 track playing in it--it worked!. I got excited and when I went to grab it there was a sticker on it that read "not for sale". Apparently it was the store's sole stereo system! Ha!

I am a total sucker for 8-track players. Have a couple. I have long wanted to pick up one of the portable Panasonics. Sweet score.

Now, get yourself some decent 8-tracks for Christ's sake!

My friend had a blue Dyn-O-Mite 8-track. I had a red Toot-a-Loop radio. Such memories!

When I was a kid, I always thought those ones in the front looked like the Death Star.

I picked up 4 ABBA 8 tracks last year at a thrift store. Opened but still had the shrinkwrap on them. I haven't tried them yet. My player is in the closet currently. I've found about a 50/50 shot with old 8 track tapes. Some will work perfect while others will self-destruct when you try to play them.

I once slept with Barry Manilow too... I had his tune Copa Cabana stuck in my head for two days straight. I was cycling through the mountains and didn't have anyone to talk to. I must have been going through some sort of mental breakdown, because I hate that song.
