Lunchbox Showdown: DC vs. Marvel, 1976

My latest article for 13th Dimension looks at two similar lunchboxes issued by Aladdin in 1976: DC's Super Friends model, and one featuring the Marvel Super Heroes.

Which box is better? Which had the better artwork, the better character selection? Take a look and let us know!

I never understood Kitten, either--shouldn't it have been Chick?

I'm fond of the FF panel on the Marvel lunchbox.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

Great article, but the Marvel lunchbox was the clear winner in that fight.

Can we talk about how cool metal lunchboxes were with that 3d effect where the character kind of popped out? I distinctly remember that being a requirement for me. They just seemed way cooler than any "flat faced" lunchbox. And don't even get me started on when plastic lunchboxes became a thing...

I would also vote on Marvel.

Never had a metal Lunchbox since in grade school went home for lunch. Plus being all boys at home, my mother would have been afraid we would knock each other out with them.

Great article, wish I had some in my collection.

I enjoyed the article and I like the artwork on both of them, but if I only could take one home, I would give the slight edge to the Marvel lunch box.

I appreciate everyone reading the article! However everyone saying they'd pick Marvel has me puzzled. Of course I've got way more nostalgia for the DC box. But the art is quite a bit better on the DC one too...

Mego no longer has the DC license, putting my weight behind Marvel !

Like you, I made that choice long ago...mine just broke the other way.

Just have to weigh in late on the side of Marvel, only because I had that one. As an aside, my other lunchbox was the Land of the Lost one. A couple of years ago, I sort of got that back, when the complete series DVD was released when the Will Ferrill movie came out.

The character selection is much better on the Marvel box, for starters. The DC has way too much on the Bat family (including duplicate Batman and Robin and the aforementioned choice to include Chick). I would also posit that if you called the Marvel side with the Fantastic Four the "front", both Marvel front and back are superior to their corresponding DC version. And the Hulk transformation is an awesome image... *far* superior to the DC villains, looking at me like they just stole the Hostess snack cakes out of my lunchbox.

It is a fun debate... and all subjective, obviously. Both are awesome.
