    Pod Stallions 120: Collector Culture

Pod Stallions 120 : Collector Culture So, you say you’re a collector, eh? Well, that’s a loaded descriptive these days, could mean just about anything! From bottle caps to vinyl records, toy soldiers and model kits, seems these days just about everyone collects something. But what does the modern collecting/fandom world look like? Luckily […]

    Don't get me started.

Scrolling through hobby pages on face book I have to constantly roll my eyes at the flood of "You have too many toys. You sound like my ex-wife. You don't have an ex-wife. I do now" memes. It's a smidge tiresome. My grandmother collected plates and figurines. Wasn't she a collector? My sister collects Lego and diecast cars.

I also remember the before times. When I was little and first started to go to doll, toy and antique shows with my mom the majority of dealers were women with a few bored looking husbands sitting at the booths with them reading newspapers. This started to change over time with more guy dealers in the main rooms and finally the women dealers were pushed off to the side into the smaller doll rooms. The prices also went up.

I certainly agree collector is now a loaded description since that has become mainstream. All kinds of people always collected all kinds of stuff but there wasn't this one big cultural group everyone was lumped into. Same with other fandoms.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Oh wow, can the wife memes end at any time? Social media is terrible with that; it repeats the same lame jokes ad nauseam.

I remember that the toy shows here were cars and dolls or guys and dolls. The women dealers were more likely to have Mego figures, the dudes were really car focused.
