Mattel horse sculpts Dazzle Blaze vs Princess of Power Swift Wind.

I saw a discussion on the Pod Stallions face book group recently on the Mattel's re-use of horse molds. I don't have the Clash Pegasus to compare but I do have Blaze and Swift Wind. Blaze is marked Philippines and Swift Wind is marked Mexico 1984.

The first thing you notice is the size is a lot different and Blaze has sculpted hair and Swifty's is rooted. There's also little differences in the sculpt, like Blaze's head is slightly turned to the side. That said, the sculpts are very similar. They might be both derived from the same master sculpt or just share the same artist. But they obviously don't share the same mold. Making Swift Wind wasn't as easy as getting the Big Jim tiger mold out of storage and making Battle Cat.

Not that I'm taking him out of storage, but to my eye Pegasus looks much like Blaze. I'm betting the sculpts are by Riccardo Aldo Favilli.

The sculpts of the toy horses Mattel released during that time were beautiful and they do look similar enough that they could have been done by one artist.

From the pictures I've seen Pegasus does look to share the exact same sculpt as Blaze. But I don't believe it's the same tooling. It looks like Pegasus is marked 1980 USA and as I mentioned before Blaze is just marked Philippines. Pegasus also has those little slots for the wings. Now, the sculpt of Pegasus and Swift Wind's wings do look very similar. But Swift Winds wings have much finer detail on the feathers. They also attach differently to the horses and of course there is the size difference.
