1979 Collegeville means KISS (and some Cylons)

Awww yeah, we wrap up our month of Halloween with our third dip into the "Collegeville barrel" with this grooving catalog from 1979.

'79 saw some great new additions to Collegeville as they scored some major licenses most important at the time would be KISS, the rock band that wore Halloween costumes 24/7. For the space kids, Collegeville had the good guys and bad bots of Battlestar Galactica and for you fantasy nerds, The Lord of the Rings!

Oh my goodness, I need to own this badly. Click on any image to check out all the fun of the 1979 Collegeville Costumes Catalog.

I think those KISS costumes are kind of cool now, but when I was a kid I wouldn't be caught dead in one, those were the easy way out. When my friend and I dressed as KISS members for Halloween (two years in a row) we used real makeup and pretty nice costumes (with my mom's help). God, I wish I had a photo of me dressed up as Ace Frehley back in 1978 but alas I don't.

The KISS masks have a pretty cool likeness, but still I would've gone for Battlestar Galactica

I looked at some of the other vintage costumes on that site and I remember having the Ultraman costume and mask. It pains me to think what it would be worth today, if I had held onto it.

Those Electric Company costumes are too much! I would have loved those as a kid!

KISS was so big at the time, it must have been a no-brainer for the stores to order those in bulk. Every time I've ever dressed as Gene Simmons, I made my own costume and used real makeup, but it would still be cool to have one of those masks!

Does anyone know if those Lord of the Rings costumes actually got made? I know 70s LOTR stuff is pretty rare, but I have never seen these or even heard of them existing.

I distinctly remember the KISS costumes being sold at K-Mart during Halloween time in 1979. I got the Paul Stanley costume a few weeks prior to Halloween and wore it out before the 31st hit. I remember wearing it all of the time for a month and playing this little KISS electric guitar that I had.

I was facinated with KISS at that time.

What's sad for me is that I know I had one of those KISS costumes, but I can't remember which one. I know it wasn't Peter Criss because that's the one I wanted. I think my cousin had Gene Simmons that year.
