    Packages

    So;

    I was wondering, what's everyone's take on the best packages? I can think of two that I liked which aren't seen so much any more:

    -The black background/chrome/blue effect. Seen during the 70's on magic sets and Micronauts. Something always seemed shiney and futuristic about this sort of thing

    -Painted boxes, like old Japanese model robots and Aurora kits. Seemed to almost tell a story with the product inside.

    Do you mean like the metallic-looking boarder around the Star Wars figure cards? It's funny that you mention that kind of thing because I just recently designed something similar for a project I was working on and I had the 70s toy packaging in mind when I did it.

    I'm not sure I'm talking about the same kind of painted boxes that you mentioned, but I miss boxes with painted art like the Mad Monsters Megos, the Aurora Monster models, the Gabriel 10" Lone Ranger box art and the 12" G.I. Joe box art and even some of the 3 3/4" G.I. Joe package art (I say "package" rather than "box" because with the 3 3/4" G.I. Joes some of my favorite art was on the carded figures). That stuff was all really appealing to me, but even as a kid, I knew the toys wouldn't actually look like what was on the box art!
    Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

      I miss painted packaging a great deal, if I ever get any of my toy ideas off the ground, I'm going to have a painted, solid box.

        As an adult, I love the art of old painted litho'ed boxes ...

        As a kid I remember being quite disappointed many times when I opened the box and found the toy nothing like the box art ... This happened most often with Japanese wind-up robot, rocketship and car toys.

            Yeah, the painted art was so cool it got your hopes up so high and then came the sobering truth, when you opened the box

              Hmmmm....

              The king, nay; GOD of misleading packages: Makoto Kobayashi!

              Dorvack Variations
              GIANT ROBO

              Much to my eternal jealousy, he actually BUILT kits that looked like the box art:
