    the moc w/o pop conundrum

Russ has a pretty cool vintage SW carded figure up for sale in the mkt which brings up this question for me. Every time I see a carded figure with the pop gone, I am left to wonder - why?

Why would someone go to the trouble of keeping the toy on the card, but then cut the pop off. Perhaps a remnant from the store where a pop thief cut it off? That certainly did happen whenever there were mail in offers. But, I would think the stores would have gotten rid of those as damaged stock and that few would have survived into collectors hands today. Seems more likely that someone saved it and then decided to trim the pop to redeem it. Crazy.

Proof of Purchase seal. Remember cutting them out to mail away for the Clark Kent in the Super Powes line.

I know I cut all mine out as a child and opened the packages. I had to go back and buy many of them carded because of it. The value drops so much when that happens , it's almost better loose.

I collect 12 Back Star Wars and the missing pop is common and helps me keep my purchases under $50.

Kind a ruins the whole MOC feeling for me.
It would be like buying the Mona Lisa ("just with one eye missing, but otherwise really minty").
But, hey, it does keep the price down.
To think how many 12 backs I ripped off the card in my childhood.
I still have my 13 (loose) Jawas, 8 Stormtroopers, etc.

Memories, from the corner of my mind.....
                .
                .
                .

I think back in the old days (the 80's) collecting was kind of young and there really wasn't a standard of do's and dont's.

I remember back in the 80's my buddy cutting the cards off MOC Return of the Jedi figures and just keeping the "mint" figure seeled in the bubble and the little bit of card left around it.
Why did he do this ?
So they fit better in his storge box.

I bet he's still kicking himself for that

                  Anyway,
Back in the old days things were a lot different then today.
Most people weren't as anal as they are now.
