I had the Star Trek book and record set that made the 'worst 5' list. Actually, I still have it. It may have been the worst of the Star Treck book and record sets, but I never heard any of the others, so to me, it was cool. I haven't heard it in years though, so it may not stand up over time.

I had it too and it was my least fave (hence it's appearance) you can do anything on a book and record, so it always bothered me as a kid.

Great article! I had several Power Records as a kid, but most of them were albums with no books, sadly. I did have a few Star Trek:TMP book and record sets, and Superman: The Man From Krypton. Later, I heard the Batman/Joker one on the list. It was cool, but I preferred Batman's voice actor from "Robin Meets Man-Bat" and others.

Oddly enough, our own Rob Kelly wrote an article on Marvel's horror comic/record sets for this month's Halloween-themed BackIssue!. It touches on that VERY disturbing Man-Thing record set!!!

Now that I think about it, the Star Trek book and record seems kind of out of place along with "Little Women" and "Space 1999 meets Noah." I'm sure there were others that were as bad as those two, so maybe your just being influenced by the Star Trek set because the others were just so damn good! You know this means that I'm going to have to find the other Star Trek sets now to see for myself! By the way, no G.I. Joe book and record sets on the 'Best 5' list? What gives?

Yeah, those were full of win, I totally agree.

I just got sidetracked by the whole "clown blows a hole in his head" opening to Man Thing...

Oh man, I love book & record sets! I have a large collection of Power and Peter Pan book and record sets (and some just records), that I do still actually play. I have 2 of your worse (Gemini Man and Crier In Emptiness), and I do like them. But I don't have the book to Crier In Emptiness, and I think it translates better if you've never seen the pictures and can imagine it for yourself. I like Gemini Man too, but since there'e no book w/ that one either, I think it is rather odd they'd make a record of something so clearly meant to be visual, (how can you hear someone turn invisible?), unless you were a major fan of the show, and again can picture it in your mind.

But I've brought book and records to school before, and have had mixed reactions. Some kids think it's really cool, while it can't hold the attention of others.

But back in the day, where most of the time, you had to wait a whole week for your favorite show to be on TV, book and records, view-masters, Colorforms, and of course our beloved action figures were a great way to tide you over until you could see your heroes again.

Does anyone know the narrator on the Man-Thing? That voice is so familiar.

And count me amongst the kids who loved these. I had 3 or 4 and just loved listening to htem. Even then, I thought they were a bit cheesey, but I still ate them up.

Alright, I'm wasting waaaaay too much time listening to these (BRAIN!!!!). Is The Human Torch voiced by the person who voiced Speed Racer?

I am not certain, but the guy who voiced Batman, and did the voice over for the POTA (havent kistened to the rest yet) sure sounds like John Dehner, who amongst other things voiced Palladin on the "Have Gun Will Travel" radio show.

I kinda miss these things. I have a Flash/Aquaman .45, the Empire Strikes Back lp, the Star Trek lp put out for the Motion Picture, and a Bugs Bunny Christmas .45. Wonder if these would sell today....on CD, or MP3 downloads or somesuch?

Ha! I still have mine, now I'll have to see if they still play. Love the lobotomy discussion in the Batman comic.

I tried converting a couple of mine to CD a few years back complete with sized-down comics....unfortunately the aforementioned Batman one has a nice skip in the record.
