    Space:1999 Day!

Seeing as today is the ten year anniversary of the supposed date that the moon blew out of orbit in Gerry Anderson's 1975 television series "Space:1999" I thought it would be fun to look at some of the cool merchandise that came out of the series.

Above is the trading card I made using the Mego/Palitoy Catalog, these figures were the thing that turned me into an ardent "toy collector" in 1985, so it goes without saying I'm fond of them.

Above is a page from the 1975 Mattel catalog, Mattel held the license in the US and while the dolls they made kind of suck, the Eagle playset they made more than makes up for it. It is so full of win, click the picture to explore the gallery.

This page from the 1976 Azrak Hamway catalog shows just some of the many items they made for 1999 including many rack toys and some higher brow electronic pieces like that hard to find commander Koenig walking doll.

Of all the rack toys made, my favourite had to be this stun gun water pistol, I had one as a kid and it was the closest thing to an actual prop you'd own in 1976. Space:1999 AHI Rack Toys Gallery.

Space:1999 Pajamas because even Alphans need their sleep.

Toyfair:1976 A representative from Saalfields shows off their latest offering, based on the new sicence fiction series "Space:1999" to the buyer from Bradlees. I need to review that for colouring book theatre....

Amsco made this killer cardboard Moonbase Alpha, someday.....

Got a Space:1999 collection? I want to put it on the site! Drop me a line with your cool collections!

I actually one that stun gun in the Mego Raffle auction this summer. It's very cool.

That moon base is very well done. It's hard to tell it's cardboard from here! I think I had the Marvel City at a very early age. I think I still have a few odd characters around here somewhere....

Back in the 80's I bought a small hoard of the Grand Toys Road Stars "Hawk".

They were one of the things I bought that actually went up in value about 2000% in the time I had them.

Made a pretty penny when I sold them off.

Wish I kept a few today.

That Moon Base Alpha playset is kickbutt. I really wish I had the space to set mine up, it would be awesome to play with, err...I mean, to display.

Blam Ventures is a publisher of comic books. They announced some POTA stuff awhile back. If I were to guess, I would say they picked up a license to do new 1999 comic books...Possibly even reprint some of the old Charlton stuff?

Wish the 3 3/4" figures were as well done as the prototypes shown. Articulate them at the hips too, and they may have been more popular than the cruddy 9" Mattel figures. I still recall my shock and disenchantment when I opened up my Commander Koenig figure and found he used the same body as my Sisters Sunshine Family dolls!!! I quickly put his outfit on Captain Kirk, and played with the toy that way.
If only the Megos had made it to our shores instead!

I remember getting a 9" Koenig at some store when we were on a family vacation somewhere. The odd thing is that I never even watched Space 1999, I was just always a sucker for a new action figure. But I too was disappointed when I opened him up and found that he wasn't anywhere near as poseable as my Megos. And he couldn't even hold onto his gun. Oh well, even though I still don't watch or care for the TV show, I have the Mattel figures in my collection for nostalgic reasons. And I think the head sculpts are quite good considering everything else that was wrong with these.

I just noticed the catalogue mentions a sort of gift set that includes the playset and all three figures. I wonder if this made it to production? I wonder if it had a different box than the regular playset, or just the same one with the figures crammed in and a sticker slapped on the front? If this thing does exist, it might be something as hard to find as the Enterprise gift set.

I wish I had a Zython. Those things hardly ever turn up. I remember Hector had one to sell, I'm now kicking myself for not seriously going after it.

I really loved 1999 when I was a kid, and I remember watching it during those times when it first aired. "Devil in the Dark" scared the crap outta me when I was little.

Anyone remember those Peter Pan record sets? I don't think they were all that bad... they did quite nicely in the days before VHS or a bazillon rerun channels.

I had the little Eagle from that set, and I loved it! Somehow, I missed out on the big Corgi Eagle, and I don't know how. My dad would have jumped at one of those.
