Technically, both releases were the same robot, Great Mazinger. The first version, which was closer in looks to the Popy Great Mazinger, was just called "Mazinga" by Mattel, while the later version, which strayed farther from Popy's original toy design was given the proper "Great" prefix in front of his name. (all versions have "Great Mazinger/Mazinga" written in Japanese katakana characters on the gold "belt" sticker). Popy's Mazinger Z (a completely different robot) never received a US release by Mattel. Confused yet?Comment

Hmmmm.... lokin' back, the one my friend had when we were kids was definitely Mazinger Z. It had the bubble shaped Pilder-thingie instead of the brain jet, and straight horns.
'Course; we lived in Canada so maybe Mattel released 'em here and not in the US?

You're right, that description is definitely Mazinger Z. Mattel didn't release that figure anywhere in the world. But some of the Popy versions did get some distribution in some Asian stores in Chinatowns in larger North American cities (in their original Japanese boxes) so maybe your friend got one at an Asian store in Toronto or something? That's pretty cool, most North American kids didn't get a chance to play with any of the Japanese exclusive Machinders.Comment

>I wish I had a store like that around me when I was a kid.
I wish we still did. It was always cool going to weird little stores like that 'cos you never knew what you'd find. (I was SOOOO excited to find a Dyna-Robo kit.)
>speaking of Mazinger Z
....you've seen "....VS Devilman?"

I was just over at my parent's house and found my Shogun Warrior. He actually does have all 10 missiles, two swords, a chest sticker and the spaceship in the head is attached rather than one that comes out. He's not in mint condition, but in much better shape that I had expected. Before I gave any details, I was given the rough price of $40 to $120. With this info, can anyone narrow down what I might be able to get for this guy?Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.Comment

The market really fluctuates on these, but you know, I've recently been seeing incomplete ones sell easily for $50-70. The only thing that hurts yours is that it's the later version that's in a bit less demand, but being complete is a huge plus. You should be able to get over $75.00 for him no problem, even around $100 is possible on the right day.Comment

the fact that he has all of his accessories alone would bring it up closer to the $100.00 price. How far from mint condition is he?"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

I'd need a bit more info on condition to make a better judgement. For example, stickers are important, especially the big chest one in this version's case. Any stickers missing or damaged? And are any of the missile holders on his legs cracked or broken?
