My Prehistoric (Aurora, Pyro) Shelf!

I often roam around your site looking at the pictures.

Anyone know if anyone is going to continue releasing any of the Prehistoric Scenes kits like Revell recently did? I know Mobius (or one of those little companies) was going to redo the Swamp last year but cancelled it.

Moebius was going to reissue the Swamp but changed their plans when it looked like there wasn't going to be enough interest to make it profitable.
Haven't heard of any more plans since then. I talked to Frank at WF, and he said he hasn't ruled the idea out, but there wasn't anything planned right now.

I am hoping that if Monarch ever gets going, that maybe they would take a chance.

I would love to see some of the new resin add-on kits produced in styrene also, but I won't hold my breath.

I still bug Revell occasionally about reissuing the Trex. That was the one they didn't do in this latest round. And right now, you can't even find one of the reissues for under $100.

I dug out some photos I'd taken of some of my Prehistoric Scenes buildups before they were packed up in storage.

Here's the T-Rex box, and the white un-decorated JC Penney catalog sales box Trevor mentioned:



Here's the Ankylosaurus. He's a bit rarer in the Aurora edition with the full base, since it was one of the last PS kits offered and didn't get as many years worth of manufacturing. But it has been re-issued regularly by Monogram/Revell, and was just re-issued in the last year:

One of the things I loved the most about them were the unusual colors that so many of them were made in. I always try to incorperate as much of the original color in the buildup as possible, and often leave a lot of bare plastic, mixed with realistic paint coats. I like leaving the edges of the base in bare plastic as well, but I polish it a bit.

Here's the Triceratops, probably one of the least-realistic with his metallic plastic and sharp - decidedly non-herbivore teeth:


This is the Flying Reptile, cast in a lurid crimson color. This is a pre-owned buildup (as are mostly all of my PS collection) that I haven't done any restoration on yet.



Here's the Spiked Dinosaur, Styracosaurus. His color is a more conventional green. The tree actually isn't an Aurora part, it comes from a latter brown colored Monogram Snap-Tite series reissue which also supplied half of the base for this restoration as well. This is a survivor of my childhood collection, Monogram parts and all:

Here's a couple more I had photos of...

Cro-Magnon Woman, which was a minty fresh unbuilt kit I picked up for $10 at a flea market years ago. Trevor's website has pics of a rejected, more-busty sculpt of the figure's torso/head components, another of the precious few PS prototypes out there:



Lastly, here's the ever-popular Cave, Home of Early Man, cobbled togther and restored from several buildups I acquired. This is a really neat feat of model-design, made up of interchangeable walls, floor & roof panels, load of accessories... truly much more of a play set than one would traditionally think of as a model kit.



...Two caves can be combined into a whole, Flintstones-like structure, or matched with the cave floor & wall segments of the CAVE BEAR kit.

The last 'early man' pieces have never been re-issued, and I have no idea if the tooling for them survived the accidental scrapping Monogram did of some Aurora materials wen they acquired them. I seriously doubt there'd be any real modern demand for the Aurora cave-folks these days, considering how inaccurated and dated their portrayals are. And since they're smaller-scale than Aurora's classic monster kits, they wouldn't fit that re-issue collection either.

Actually, you need one more wall piece to make a complete cave out of 2 of them. Basically you need 7 wall segments to make a complete circle. 2 caves and the wall piece from the cave bear.

I have to upload/scan it, but in the lastest issue of G-fan they give you a pic of an unproduced Aurora godzilla model that was to come out later in the line when they did Rodan and Ghiderah

I mean.... neat! I've ALWAYS loved these kits, and I've been slowly finishing my set. Thanks to the reissues it's not too tough. Having a heck of a time with the nameplates though. You'd think someone would have repro'd them by now; like they have with the bases. (And I don't know about you; but I got the recent reissued Woooly Mamoth, and the nameplate was blank.)

The only problem is that there are so many garage kit companies doing add-ons now I may NEVER finish my set. (Must. Fight. Urge....) That, and the Cro-Magnon man seems out of scale. (Unless he was about 8 feet tall in life.)

I was thinkin' of getting a set of the LifeLike/Lindberg dino kits. Those have been reissued a lot, so it'd be easy to get a set. I kinda remember they had three diorama sets; full of cavemen and such, that are really hard to find.

But Cultman has repro nameplates to replace the ones Revell screwed up.
