    My Prehistoric (Aurora, Pyro) Shelf!

Before Micronauts, Japanese robots, Godzilla and Ultraman, anime and all the other stuff that dominates my hobbies, I loved dinosaurs like any other little kid. My favorite dinosaur things were cheap plastic models that my dad built for me, and Aurora's amazing Prehistoric Scenes snap kits, which I could make myself. This is a portion of my current collection of those things.

Included here is the only publicly acknowldeged Prehistoric Scenes kit prototype - a painted hardcopy of Bill Lemon's amazing sculpt for the Giant Bird (probably used as a model for the box art painting). Also, there's a carbon of the concept art for the Prehistoric Scenes' Neanderthal kit from the files of the late HSM Company of Willow Grove, PA (design firm which actually created many of the best toys and hobby kits from the 60s, 70s and 80s).

There in the middle are three childhood buildups from the Life Like Models "Prehistoric Monsters" kit line, re-issued from Pyro's 1960s kit line. My dad built and painted two of them, and I built the bronto - probably all before I was 9 years old! They had great cavemen with some of them, and were occasionally old Pyro stock molded in funky colors, like swirled metallic and purple.

I have all the Prehistoric Scenes - including the big Red T-Rex, with both his box and the blank JC Penney catalog box. Some of those are shelved elsewhere, or stored away waiting for restoration. (Many of these are still available today in various re-issue forms. Several of both the Prehistoric Scenes and the Pyro/Life-Like dinosaurs were re-released just last year. But often the Prehistoric Scenes re-releases are missing their elaborate diorama bases.)

Alan at the Kruger Street Toy and Train museum asked me if I'd like to provide a temporary exhibit of these guys for a few months next year, so that'll be one of my major projects this fall.

I've always loved those. I remember seeing shelves full of them at the hobby store and other stores like Woolworth's.
I had quite a few and duplicates of many but never seemed to get the ones I really wanted. Must've been the expensive ones or maybe I didn't ask hard enough, LOL.
I remember getting the Tarpit, Allosaurus, Pteranodon at least twice each over the years.

Some of the Aurora kits always seemed to be less common than others. I got into them (thanks to my grandparents on both sides, actually) about the time that Aurora went out of business, but there were still plenty of some of them on store shelves.

My first was Jungle Swamp, of all things. Then others trickled in on holdays, birthdays, or as presents when my mom or other relatives went away on trips to areas where there were different places to shop. The big T-Rex was a christmas gift from a JC Penney catalog. I remember sending in stamps to get an Aurora catalog as advertised on the Rex's instructions, but later getting back a reply from some other company saying Aurora was no longer in business, and the offer was over. A couple of the kits I only got when Revell re-released them.

But then when I was in college I gave the remains of my collection to a neighbor kid who had an interest in dinosaurs. I have no idea if he still has them. The collection I have now I rebuilt myself, picking up kits cheap or in trade or from lucky auctions (the Sailback only cost me $18!), or pieceing them together from a couple of big boxed lots I picked up at a toy show, selling and trading extras and parts along the way. Much like Megos - with some patience, skill and a social group with a shared interest (the Aurora collectors' Yahoo! group), you can build a nice collection for a fraction of the going price.

I still have one from my childhood - the Aurora edition of the Spiked Dinosaur (Styracosaurus). It was relatively complete when I gave my childhood collection away, so I just decided to keep it, as well as the smaller Pyro/Life-Like dinosaurs my dad & I built.

Nice to see some pics of your collection Ray.
I knew it was you as soon as I saw the Neanderthal sketch.
Then the bird just sealed the deal.

Thinking of getting back into the dino's again?
Or is all your time still tied up with micronauts?

Also, the bird isn't the only prototype out there.
Not complete kits, but there is the prototype for the 1st version of the cromagnon woman, and an alternate set of legs and trunk for the mammoth.
Phil has them. But if you shoot Al at Python an email he might be able to hook you up with some resin castings.
I've got a bunch of pics of them.

                  Heya, Trevor!!!!

Yeah - Sorry I didn't credit those bits at your amazing site. I should have said 'complete dino'.

                  I think I had e-mailed Al, but didn't get a response.

I need to drop you a note about a couple of things relative to the exhibit I'm working up, too!

                        That's for sure.
My collection might be bigger, but he has better stuff in his.
If I remember correctly, he also still has the JCPenny's box for his Trex.

I often roam around your site looking at the pictures.

Anyone know if anyone is going to continue releasing any of the Prehistoric Scenes kits like Revell recently did? I know Mobius (or one of those little companies) was going to redo the Swamp last year but cancelled it.

                              Tay,
You have a great site, I stumbled upon it last summer before I started posting here. I wish I had some of those kits.
They have some of the Revell Dinos in my local HobbyTown, I am going to buy them soon, they have been sitting for more than a year.
But Id love to have some of the Aurora kits, I had some reissues I think of them as a kid in the 70s, but they are long lost.
