I just don't understand why toys like this aren't made anymore. I would love for my son to have this to play with instead of the crappy stuff they make today.

Because ever since Mattel bought Fisher Price they would rather make squeaky dog toy Little People. I swear if I ever win the lottery I'm buying Fisher Price from Mattel and returning the original style peeps!
Mattel recently made 50th Anniversery sets of the chunkier style Little People which is kind of stupid because the chunkies have only been around since 1990. They should have gone with the classic style in celebration of their 50th birthday! d'oh!
the 50th anniversary sets had me puzzled.
basically a lunchbox with a couple of chunkys and a picture of the classic sets on the packaging. ???
I always supposed the chunkys were to stay in compliance with child safety rules.
who knows in 20 years maybe folks will say "I just can't take the holographic little people and interactive chickens, give me back the 100 soundbites from my chunky farm set"
I don't think the original Little People were changed due to safety issues. I believe that has become some sort of urban legend. The original Little People boxes do have a warning on them that they were "not intended for children who still put objects in the mouths regardless of age" and the age specifications on every box was set at a minimum of 2 years old. There are toys still currently being made which have much smaller pieces including the current style people.
I can see why perhaps they were changed from wood to plastic. The oldest wood people had a nail holding them together. But even those are difficult to take apart. I need vice grips most of the time when I am making customs. The paint on the wood figures was always non-toxic and up to safety standards for at least that time period.
It's a wonder any of us even survived our childhoods.
