He's got it a little mixed up, somebody originally approached the Kroffts about using Pufnstuf for McDonalds commercials then later they just ripped off all the characters with McDonaldland.

The big problem was Mayor McCheese, who looks a lot like Pufnstuf. The Kroffts got a million in damages...

I am pretty sure the original Ronald McDonald in the commercials was Willard Scott the weather man. Not sure if that was him in that commercial, but I remember seeing him in a B/W one

Agreed! I think those characters would sell JUST as well as they did when they debuted. Kids would love McDonalds today with Grimace, Hamburgler etc. Why they were dropped I have no idea.
