    Godzilla Day!

Well, it's one of those days where your teacher is too hung over to do anything so he just wheels in the projector. In my case, I'm sick but it works just as well. I thought it would be fine time to showcase these commercials from our DVD showcasing a character near and dear to my inner eight year old, Godzilla!

First off is this commercial for the Mattel Godzilla Game a product I honestly don't remember but it was part of Mattel's late seventies love affair with the character and the graphics are just sweet.

Secondly and this really is the classic, the Mattel Shogun Warriors Godzilla, while I think every 70s toy collector should be court ordered to buy one, I'd also love to get a hold of the Japanese version which looks more like the big guy.

    Get him Stretchy Supes!

I'm still hopelessly devoted to finding the HG Toys "Godzilla vs Tricephalon" play set for myself someday. Anybody got one for sale, I guess it would help if I checked Ebay for one.

Lastly, another classic, the Ben Cooper Godzilla Halloween costume, another thing that made you jealous when you saw kids wearing it on October 31st..

Have a great weekend people, I'm off to stomp a city!

        Yay, Godzilla day!

I agree about the Shogun Warriors Godzilla. A lot of hardcore Godzilla collectors look down on that toy as a very inferior likeness of Goji (some downright ridicule it) but I personally think it's an absolute classic 70's toy and my childhood one still has a very special place in my toy collection. Still, I'm also hoping to snag the more accurate Popy Jumbosaurus version one day.

That playset is cool, but from what I hear, not easy to get. For what it's worth, the really outdated Godzilla Collectibles price guide pegs it's value at $150-225, but I have no idea how accurate of a price that is these days.

Oh, and I love that catalogue shot of Godzilla and Elastic Supes.

Who is the would-be child molester in the background of the Shogun commercial. The kids are having a good time at the beach and there's some guy staninding cross-armed in the background? Kinda creepy.

I noticed thoughout Godzilla's lifetime as a toy, he usually goes by the name GODZILLA or GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS .... even up to today.

Do the different titles mean anything in particular ?

Hmmmm.... interesting question. I don't think so. "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is the full title of the original film.

                  That's what had me wondering.
Does the "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" title mean this toy was based loosely on the filmed verson of (any movie) Godzilla ?

and perhaps the "Godzilla" title means it was based on some other source ... cartoons, comics etc.

Strange,I had a dream about Godzilla last night, specifically the "godzilla gang" toys put out in the US in the late 70's. Also, why does the copyright list Marvel when it's Superman?

GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS was just the full English title of the US version of the first film (the original Japanese cut was just called GOJIRA...although a couple years later, Toho did release the US version of the film in Japan and used the KOTM title, but I digress..). I guess the tag stuck, and was sometimes used in other products or promotional material, but not always. Sort of like sometimes Spider-man was described as "amazing", but often not.

Don't think it has anything to do with the source. Besides, 99.9% of all Godzilla merchandise is based on the films anyway. A few US only items were based on the cartoon, and I don't recall anything being based on a comic book Godzilla.

....we all have our off days....

Yeah. I remember Godzilla being described as the king of the monsters a lot when I was a kid. Maybe it was brought back as a marketing ploy?

                              >A few US only items were based on the cartoon,

True too! I can only remember a Godzooky stuffed animal.

                              >and I don't recall anything being based on a comic book Godzilla.

There WAS a black light felt poster you could win at the carnival that was awfully reminiscent of the square-jawed Godzilla from the comic, but I don't know if that was a "on purpose" sort of thing.
