Where do you draw the line?

    In collecting, that is.
Do you have a specific focus? Or perhaps some guidelines to your collecting.
    Is it only MEGO?
Anything is fair game prior to 1980?
    Only one scale?
    Only one character?
Do you ever place modern toys in with your vintage collection?
Do you have your collection organized into any sort of grouping or order?

I tend to stick with action figure type toys from the 60s and 70s as those were what I was playing with as a kid. But I do have some areas of focus that I will purchase modern toys if they fit the bill. I was thinking of this as I was dusting off my 1979 Alien items. These toys are fantastic, but the lines always seem to have a hard sell at the store and end up getting canned. The latest wants for these are the Neca items and Medicoms most recent RAH. Those can proudly stand next to my Kenner Alien.

The modern Star Wars is another item I will pick up occasionally. I like most of the original trilogy items Hasbro has offered lately; Extra special items were the McQuarrie series from the 30th anniversary collection. I can do without the prequel stuff and the Clone wars are OK, but not really my cup of tea.

Spider-Man items are also no holds barred for me. Partially because my son and daughter are both big spider fans, so there is quite a bit of spider action around the house.

There are times I would like to contain my focus and have it stick more on one type or style of toy, but there really are just too many cool things out there. How about you?

I collect so many different things that I never even bothered drawing a line. IF I were to though I would make mine all Mego's ONLY and forget about all of the other stuff. Only IF I could actually do that. That would be so great!
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

Too much space. Need more toys!

I usually stick to action figures from the 60's-early 90's and sports memorabilia

But now I've gotten myself into the Disney WDCC Disney figures and I'm hooked

I try to stick to vintage stuff, mostly that I had (or wanted) as a kid, but sometimes I just fall for stuff and it gets placed in my collection.

            Hmmmm....

For figures, I've always considered the 8" Mego body the greatest action figure ever; and now I pretty much only collect stuff that's in scale with it. Other neat figures get made into customs.

There are some odd sets though:
-I have a bunch of my old Playmobil guys. Can't part with 'em. Most were gifts.
-Almost done a set of UFO COmmander Seven toys. Although they're currently being used as models for 8" scale versions.

I have tons of model kits too. Many sets of which I've been meaning to complete, build and display since I was a kid. (LIke the Aurora Prehistoric Scenes, and the old Gundams.)

Vintage only with pretty much a 70's focus. I love toys from the 50's thru the early 80's, but I mainly buy 70's stuff.

I find modern toys a complete utter bore--in fact I collect all kinds of things and if there is one thing I hate is any item that is made and marketed AS A COLLECTIBLE. I just don't see the point in that AT ALL.

Vintage Batman stuff mainly, but there's so much out there that I've had to alter/redirect my focus somewhat

I have a very niche set of standards. Mego is at the center, but then I branch out to any other sci-fi/fantasy/horror/comics figures (mostly) with cloth outfits. I like Big Jim and Lone Ranger. Even though I love them and had them as a kid, I kind of draw the line at G.I. Joe, Marx, and other 12 in. figs (incl. most 1:6 Mego). I don't really do figures without removable clothing, even though I actually have a few, including the 7-in Farscape figs (which have some cloth parts).

I do like and collect 9in figs from the 90s, such as Playmates Star Trek, Exclusive Premiere, ToyBiz Marvel, and Hasbro DC b/c they remind me of Mego/Big Jim hybrids.

I won't let myself collect comics, as that represents too big a potential hit to my income... it'd be like moving from pot to crack, I think.

Mainly I collect anything superhero related from the 70s. Occasionally I will go after a few 60s and early 80s marvel items.

In the wild, if I see a cool vintage toy that I like, I buy it if I can afford it. On a recent trip I bought a still packaged Charlie's Angels outfit from goodwill simply because it was old and would have probably been destroyed by some uninformed kid otherwise. I don't even have a use for it but the packaging is cool, even if it isn't mint.

Otherwise I tend to stick to the Mego style of action figures. I really like those Rainfall Bible Greats but I can't find any. I got one at a flea market and have wanted some more ever since.

I'm 70s for the most part too, except for Atari 2600 games, which went into the 80s.

For me it's whatever floats my boat or has some tie to my childhood. I'll probably do more once I have more room to showcase things.

My main focus is on 70's monster/robot and alien/sci-fi toys. I don't really like having too many human figures in my collection, although, Kirk and Luke have snuck their homo sapien faces in there. I also have a soft spot for 80's action figures as that's the era I grew up in. The one thing I try to stay away from is "cute". I try'd to avoid the Universal monsters because of this factor. 90% of universal monster stuff I see, is some sort of "cute" frankenstein or dracula and I can't stand it

                              limits

I only collect 1979 and earlier, i also keep it to superhero figures, they must have full bodies, not vehicles with heads attached etc. There is just way too much cool stuff out there....it's limitless. Even with those limits there is still a million things that i would like!!! I also built a case and told myself when it's full, no more, i wonder how that will work?
