Anybody remember some sort of President US fitness test in the 70's ?

The Bicentenial sheet thread gave me a flash-back

In 1976 we had some kind of weird Presidential physical fitness test.

The whole school was involved and the kids were made to do all kinds of tests to determine their physical fitness.

I remember one of the tests was running across the football field 3 times ... up-down-up.

There were other physical tests too.

If you scored a certain amount, you would win a special award from the President (Gerry Ford) and a Bicentenial patch.

In the end, everyone won the prizes.

My award is long gone ... but I still have my patch

Those were always a big deal with the boys, like who could do the most push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, climb the rope in the gym, running. All sorts of physical stuff.

I think it was a gov. plot to find the most athletic kids, and then steal them away for some kind of super soldier bourne identity type agent training. I used my abilities to take out the guards, scale the fence, run away from the compound, pull myself out of the roaring river, and go home to my megos.

      The girls were involved too.

I specifically remember because I got beat by girls on many of the tests

Oh man, I remember those tests. I think it was called the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. I always did really well until you got the pull-ups. I was never strong enough to get my chin to the bar 3 times or whatever the number was that garnered you the highest award.

I did, however, really excel at the shuttle run. That's the one where you sprint back and forth between a short distance. At the end of each leg there was a something you had to pick up (we used erasures) before you ran back the other direction. Unfortunately, great times in the shuttle run were not something with which I could impress the chicks later in High School.

Funny thread. It wasn't too long ago, I was rummaging through some old stuff and found a certificate saying that I had been awarded the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.

My mom seemed to hold onto stuff like this and handed me a whole scrapbook full of things that I had accomplished when I was young.

I remember something about it but don't recall it being an actual test. I am remembering it more as a set of standards that we were expected to achieve (perhaps to pass gym class??) but I could just be forgetting. I don't remember winning anything or getting any sort of certificate. Then again, I hated gym class.

I remember it. The chin-ups and shuttle run really stand-out in my mind.

I flunked the test I could never climb the ropes to the top in gym. Kids used to groan when I was put in their line.
                        It's all good!

My gym teacher was super cool with stuff like that.
He was a little overweight himself and looked exactly like Hulk Hogan.

                            True story .......

We all were in line to climb the ropes ...
I knew I couldn't climb them and so did he.
He pulled me on the side and said "Mike, you wanna look like an idiot in front of your classmates or should I just put you down for a 0 for not even trying ?"

                            I said ... "will a 0 mean anything ?"

He said "Yea, a 0 means nobody is gunna laugh"

                            I took the 0

                            Cool guy.

All I know is, I fell short on one of the requirements and didn't get the damn certificate. Screw you President Carter!
