GAF in view with Superman & The Muppets

Superman was heavily merchandised this year. Remember when every kid you knew had viewmasters?

I love viewmasters, I still think they are awesome. It's too bad they no longer make decent reels, just an assortment of Nickelodeon & Disney Princesses. I picked up a couple viewers at K-B when they were closing out for fifty cents apiece.

Did you know viewmaster reels were used to teach doctors & dentists how to perform operations and delicate surgeries? They would film sections of the surgery and send those out as kits to doctors in out of the way locales.

Those reels are very rare & expensive, as are salesman samples, especially from car companies. They would give salesmen reels with the new lines on them to show prospective customers, back in the fifties.

That's interesting! I guess there were ways to disseminate info before satellite and the internet, after all. Pretty cool.

Some older relative gave me a bunch of Viewmaster reels from the 60s when I was a kid. Interesting stuff. Lots of Bible Stories, Woody Woodpecker, and reels of scenes from National Parks. Used to sit for hours at a time in my little chair projecting them onto a wall in my room. Loved every minute of it.

I have my Mom's viewmaster and a bunch of her reels from the early 50's and also still have a some of the ones I had as a kid, too.
I was always fascinated by Viewmasters.

Actually, Johnny, there are Discovery channel animal reel sets too.

I love viewmasters, I have standard and classic talkies of the old school stuff here at home, and the newer standards and new talikies at school. My kids love these!

I was always disappointed with the Superman reel because they tried to fit the ending all onto the third reel and on top of that, this is when the movie was going to include elements of Superman II, so it was really a jumble on that third reel. Wish I had the Muppet one.
              It's all good!

Back in the day, these were the only way for saw places unless you opened a book or went on vaction in the day before cable TV and the internet.

Yes, we have one of those newer talking sets too, with the Jungle animals, Dinosaurs, and a Scooby doo set. I thought my daughter would be interested, but no. Can't say as I liked the newer talkies either..nothing beats that ginourmous drive-in movie speaker shaped Talking ViewMaster from the '70s with it's tinny echo sound and little plastic floppy record discs- I have a Lancelot Link set & a few other loose reels for it. I think it uses 6 'D' batteries or something like that!

As far as regular reel sets go, I like all the old TV series & cartoons, but I also kind of like all those travel reels like Luray Caverns or Historic Williamsburg. I have a Bicentennial Philadelphia set. Nice snapshots of the period, same with the 1950S era sets. The folks in them always look so happy to be standing next to some cheesy sign at an alligator ranch in the Florida Everglades. Things were so much nicer I think when Storybook Forest was an attraction to walk around in without 18 story rollercoasters screaming over your head or $100 a day admission.

The original talkies take 2 C batteries, Johnny. And yes, even w/ the crackly, tinny sound, the classic talkies are way better than the new ones. The new ones have like 1 sound or one phrase per frame, while the old ones have a whole paragraph.

I always had a lot of fun with Viewmaster. I even loved the Talking Viewmaster (maybe it was 3D, too) that I had back then ..(Three Little Indians, ADAM-12, etc, etc)
